In the long, long, long, loooooong list of stupid things posted by Cubs fans on this board, this statement here will never be topped. Lose a WORLD SERIES for just the chance at signing a big name free agent.

Sarcasm Frank. Sarcasm .

 come on frank

Frank is fired up today, give him a break. Jerry’s boots aren’t gonna lick themselves.

It sounds like this didn't get done because JR and his minions were once again trying to get cute in contract negotiations making a huge offer (350) that was significantly incentive laden. The Padres guaranteed 300 and the Sox wouldn't match.

So it sounds like the 8/$250M was the base offer and with incentives it could've been worth 8/$350M+.

Alonso and Jay are going to be a really shitty year long reminder of Sox failure. If either has a bad season he will be the object of a lot of anger.

I think it's pretty much guaranteed they're going to suck.

This year will be fun bad again.

IN a move that SHOOKS NO ONE, manny doesn"t sign here? lol

BUT,,,its all about the REBUILD, and EXPEREINCE of the park! NOW im sure FF or Frank will tell me how good Moledo tastes with a CHURRO? The REAL question is, how much money am I paying to STATE OF IL PARK if they dont sell enough beer???

2029 Will come, JERRY will be GONE, none of his kids have the stones or SMRTS to get the deal he did, unless another Daley gets the Throne, that could be the end. By then VEGA$ wont want them, they will have a pro team. San Antonio White Sox. Hmmmm?

It looks like the Sox offered more money, but that the contract was Reinsdorfed with weird clauses and protections. The Albert Belle and Frank Thomas deals were the same. With the difference in state income taxes it seems like he would have made more with the Sox as well. Pretty embarrassing to build your entire off-season around this move, and not just give the guy what he wanted to make it happen when they were already willing to go up to $250 million guaranteed.

Players offer discounts to sign with the Cubs, and players avoid the White Sox even when they offer the highest annual salary and the highest potential overall contract value.

Weird Jerry tries to screw people in negotiations. It works for people with no alternatives. We see what happens with both the Bulls and the Sox when they do have alternatives.

Those discounts really helped “us” with the three signings in 2018 and Heyward. Great value.

Teams were just lining up to take on Cole Hamels as well.

Sad day for Sox fans. Even sadder behavior from Cubs fans.

I'm sorry that you aren't a really big fan of 4 straight (and counting) playoff appearances, three NLCS appearances and 1 World Series during this current era of Cubs baseball.

Yu Darvish is going to make a lot of people eat their posts this season, and beyond.

Hey, you all accused the Cubs of buying their World Series with all of their free agent signings. That they didn't truly win due to their rebuild. Now the White Sox have a chance to win the right way. Prospects only. This should be a great day for you.

I am sorry that you don’t realize those guys did not take discounts to come here and have been mostly wasted money up until now. Harper won’t be here because of those bad contracts, the so called opportunity cost.

He took less to play for the Padres.

So if you are willing to do 250 for 8....why not be willing to go 300 for 10? Is 2 years really a sticking point for a guy you supposedly really want?

Which may mean?

1. He was concerned about hitting the performance goals in the Sox offer? and/or

2. The Padre has agreed to pay him even if (when) the players go on strike/get locked out (because labor strife is coming)? (There is no way the Sox would ever agree to do that.)

Edit - sounds like the Sox had some team options at the end of their offer in the event of injury, so the Padre offer was arguably better than the Sox' offer.

Did the Sox offer a player option in their packages? It's a nice perk with the impending lockout and new CBA coming up.

Machado wanted the 300MIL guaranteed. Not 250 + whatever crazy incentives the White Sox tried to sell him.
