India has just bombed a large target in Pakistan. Reportedly a terror camp belonging to JeM. 10-12 Mirage 2000s were used and crossed the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir between India and Pakistan. Despite fighting a minor war in 1999, this is the first time India has crossed the LoC since 1971

This appears to be in retribution for the bombing that killed 40 Indian soldiers a few weeks ago. Why is this relevant? Because Pakistan has said they would respond to any move across the LoC, despite the fact Pakistan was harboring the terrorists who blew up the Indian soldiers.

Both countries are nuclear armed and this is the 1st conflict where both sides can deliver as in 1999, Pakistan didn't have any delivery systems for their recently tested bomb. While a regional nuclear war seems like it would be far from a worry for us, the soot put into the air by the consumption of cities, forests, etc. would be sufficient to block out enough sun to lead to global famine would likely kill 10-20% of the global population.

So keep an eye out on this and hope that cooler heads prevail. If Pakistan is smart, they would acknowledge this is the price for harboring JeM within their territory and let the Indian strike pass. However, their rhetoric seems to suggest otherwise.

This was the area in the world that Obama said scared him the most right? I've thought these two were bound to do something stupid for awhile now.

and I can understand that fear. They were always 1 incident away from this. Pakistan *wanted* to use nukes in 1999, but they just didn't have a viable delivery system at the time.

India is done right now, that was a one-off strike from them to both hit a target related to the previous attack and to send a message.

It's now on Pakistan to walk away. The only way India strikes again is if Pakistan retaliates for this. India pantsed them here, but Pakistan has to realize they deserved it for harboring JeM. India has just shown them that they can effectively jam air defense systems and get 12 nuclear capable strike aircraft deep into Pak territory without a single loss. Pakistan needs to just accept the beating and call it a day. That's the only way the tensions diffuse.

Well I believe the quote I read about the Pakistani nuclear program was: "The people will eat grass, but Islam will have it's bomb." So I don't think they are scared of killing some people if it comes down to it.

I know that the scientist in charge of the nuclear program was arrested for selling nuclear secrets.

their air force is a mix of Mirages, SU-27 variants, and MiG-29s Out of those 3, the Mirage is the best for a fast strike mission. If they expected a dogfight, they'd probably use the Sukhois as an escort, but there's no word on that. I'd imagine some of their support assets were doing the jamming. An AEW bird was up 20 miles behind the Indian border.

Mirage has the legs to get there. Pakistan has the F-16s but I doubt they have a functional ADS or a sortie rate capable of deterrence. Or trained pilots, or fuel.

They would've had to be ready to scramble in order to get the F-16s up in time to intercept. They would have little warning with jamming and the Mirages also could've used glide bombs and dropped them barely over the border.

They better have not expected a dogfight. Otherwise that's a horrible idea to strike. I would have thought we sold them more up to date jets by now.

India has no US made equipment in their air force. It's entirely French and Russian. Pakistan on the other hand is US F-16s and then a bunch of Chinese aircraft. Some somewhat modern Chinese aircraft and some MiG-21 clones (that design dates back to Vietnam)

It would cool the globe by a few degrees, but the blockage in sunlight that is caused by that would also result in up to 1 billion people starving to death.

US *probably* has the capacity to feed itself, but doing so would almost have to require cutting off exports. There are no guarantees on this though.

I guess you'd be looking at several years of crop yields that are comparable to those seen in the Year without Summer.

The world as a whole probably has a 60 day cereal grain supply. US may have as much of 12 months supply though for itself. These numbers are speculative and estimates.

Those who laughed at preppers may not be laughing in this scenario.

Neither country will drop nukes. Mr. Would be Warmongerer himself getting himself lathered up at the prospects however. 1 Billion deaths. Ok. Continue listening to this idiot and fall off a cliff
Or better yet die in a fire or "kill yourself". Nukes are deterrents. No country really wants to use them. That's why there have only been two dropped in history.

A shitty ass terrorist organization isn't enough to start a nuclear exchange. Damn idiot once again providing false info.

Sure, it's Ogie that sounds like the idiot in this discussion. Because it only happened once before, it will never happen again. Right.

I'm not too familiar with the nuclear arsenal of each side, but I'd imagine both have thermonuclear capabilities so at least 100 kt each bomb. Once again, it's the firestorm and the combustion of cities, forests, etc. that produces and shoots the soot into the upper atmosphere and creates this effect.
