R13-Fountain of Youth-Big step on the trail to the Derby (although some may be looking past this to the Florida Derby). Lots of speed up front, lots. No FoY winner has come out of a maiden, so you can have Hidden Scroll on top at 9/5 or whatever, despite that impressive performance last out. Vekoma, although talented hasn’t been around 2 turns yet and will be overbet, but will get a pace set up. Code of Honor is intriguing but this work by Shug seems a bit off so this is a very important race for him. Is this race important to Signalman, currently 5th in KD points? Maybe not to win. Global campaign will be in the picture as well if he can get a clean trip from the 8 post.

Bourbon War is stepping up off a gritty win here a month ago at this distance and I like his chances to come from behind on this group. Should be a very good race.

R8-Herecomesthebride (GIII). I fell in love with Belle Laura at auction and seen every one of her races. She was overmatched in the GI last out at CD but she fits very nicely here and has been training lights out, and I like Norm Casse adding blinks.

R5-I want to throw out yet again MY GUY Cowboy Culture (also trained by Casse) racing in the Race 5 Canadian Turf (GIII)… two races ago he circled the field to win a exciting turf finish paying 7.60….and then last out in the El Prado Stakes he finished best of all 4th and getting bumped to 3rd through a d/q off odds of 20-1…He’s raced 8 times at a mile on the turf and won 5 of them and he’ll be overlooked again (although not on the will-pays)..problem here is the pace..5 of these runners were in the El Prado and none of them were anywhere near the front end of a race that set the course record (won by JORR’s guy Hembree). I think Hembree is the most logical here but hoping Cowboy can get a clean trip and earn a share, and maybe surprise at a large price again.

It seems like every wiseguy in the world is going to try to beat Hidden Scroll. I suspect he's the real deal though and we may get a square price on him today. If he's 8/5 or better I will be firing.

Mott and Juddmonte desperately want to win a Kentucky Derby. I believe that's why Mott atypically had him on edge for his debut. (The fact that he was lurking in that MSW just waiting to be turned loose likely cost me a lot of money. Keep an eye out for Robintakincharge in his next start.) He doesn't have a lot of time to get him ready for the first Saturday in May and he needs to put some points on his card. He didn't have the luxury of wasting a maiden race as a prep.

This guy gives a nice breakdown:

I think it's going to be between Hidden Scroll, Vekoma and Bourbon War. Vekoma ran awkwardly down the stretch in his last at 1 mi. with his head angled to the right out of the far turn and he had trouble straightening out. If he runs into traffic, he could get caught without tactical speed. He doesn't look like a horse, who once having lost momentum could regain it. Without having seen tape on Hidden Scroll, I would be inclined to take Bourbon War. He looks like the Real Deal Holyfield and a legit Derby contender. I like how Everfast closed in the Holy Bull, but it might not be enough in this race. If he didn't have horses in front of him in the stretch, Everfast might have finished only 1/2 length back of Harvey Wallbanger or less, who had a fast 1 1/16 mi. time, albeit from the rail. Seems like a gritty horse, like a Seeking the Soul type, which I like. This is the wrong distance for Code of Honor, who otherwise looks like a nice horse. Should stick to the mile.

If anyone has a link for video on Hidden Scroll, could you post it? They're raving about him being the next coming of Justify.

This is so difficult. i LOVE it.

Cowboy Culture didn't have the pace he's dependent on, Belle Laura ran well, but not well enough. no participation ribbons here. Still like Bourbon in the FoY. And Cookie Dough to upset Jaywalk

That's a bad beat right there. Saez boots home a 50/1 on you. Those are the ones that have you talking to yourself.

I never thought Hidden Scroll would be even money.

That turned out to be a watch race for me. I'm glad I didn't try to force anything.

I'm not sure what Rosario was doing dueling with a million to one shot. This is why you don't use a guy like him on a developing colt. The worst part isn't that you lost the race. That's insignificant in the big picture. It's teaching the horse that there's only one way that's the bad thing. You don't have to go hell bent for leather every damn time.

I'm taking a crack with Vettori Kin in this one. Probably my last play of the day, though I might try Sunset Seven in the last at Santa Anita.

Bourbon War so close. Should have started his run sooner.

I like him in the Derby, this son of Tapit.

In other news, Super Steed is out 60-90 days due to bone bruising. The good news is that he just needs rest to mend, no surgery. But no Rebel and no run for the roses.

JORR's Hawaakom running against Tenfold in the 5th at FG. Tenfold the heavy favorite at 4/5.

Only horse you're getting a price on is the 6, Casses Story.

I'm betting the 8 Compagno in the sixth. Gotta have some Mardi Gras action.

I believe blinkers should help Miltontown in the finale.

Terrible news yesterday I just read about a horse in that Mardi Gras race. The horse that unseated the rider, Oxford Comma, suffered a catastrophic injury. He was vanned off and had to be euthanized. Very upsetting that this is happening to so many horses. I don't understand how a horse can suffer a catastrophic injury on the turf down the stretch when he's just running as he normally would do, unless the jockey did something wrong, like tripped the horse with his whip or some dumb shit like that. That's what horses do, they run. Someone has to explain that one to me.

Do you think horses don't break down in a herd out in a field? We just don't see it. You've got a 1000 pound animal running on ankles that are smaller in circumference than your own. It happens.

I guess this is a philosophical discussion, but if horse racing no longer exists, these horses won't be living some bucolic life on a farm. They simply won't exist at all.

That's not what I'm saying. I agree with you that the horses have much better lives, because the sport exists. What I don't understand is how the horse could be injured in that stage of the race on a better surface than on dirt, a natural surface to horses. They're saying the horse suffered the injury and then unseated the rider. That's not how I saw it, and I watched the replay 5 times. The rider could have lost his balance, fell off, and then tripped up the horse to cause the catastrophic injury. Every rider that falls off for no reason, meaning no collision is involved, should have his ass fined big-time. Not only are they doing shady shit by falling off, they put the horses at risk that could cause catastrophic injuries. Maybe after these jockeys have to pay heavy fines they'll stop falling off. I'm talking a $15K or $20K fine per fall.
