Barker, Sajak, and Trebek are American institutions.

For you youngsters out there: Sajak replaced semi-longtime host Chuck Woolery (later of Love Connection) after nearly 7 years on WOF. Woolery missed 1 week during that run...replaced by Alex Trebek.

Did not know that.

I am old enough to have watched the show when it premiered (as a daytime gameshow). In the early years after winning a round the contestant was forced to "buy" prizes from a collection of miscellaneous items arranged adjacent to the set that seemed to have been picked at random from a Sears catalog. They were ridiculously over-priced and the kicker was that the contestant had to spend until there was nothing else they could afford...usually ending with "I'll take the coat rack for $300 Chuck".

If you watch the reruns, it is apparent that Bert more than held his own, back in the day, if you know what I'm say'n.

That's how they paid for the show in the early days, product placement covered both the operating costs as well as the prizes. And the prizes were like $1k-$2k/round. I remember when they added the $1000 piece, and that was a big deal.

I wonder if that insurance company he pushes is any good. I wonder if he vets that stuff. That one Irish-American actor (can't remember his name, but he played JFK in a tv movie when I was little) pushes gold coins or something on Fox and it seems really shady.
