Well, that's true.

I'd love to see what Haas can do as I've heard so much about him. I just doubt he is really all that great. I hope I'm wrong. I really, really hope I'm wrong because that group of WRs - bad (Brandon Lloyd excepted).

Let's hope one of the rookies can have an impact.

Getting back to Olsen, I really hope Turner is going to have him run deeper routes this year. If speed is his greatest asset, why not use it more effectively?

I would think to make best use of Olsen upfield they would need at least one receiver that the other team needs to respect.

I'm very interested in seeing Marcus Monk. A guy that big and fast would be just what they need. But, I read that even though he ran a 4.4, his game speed is not that great. He doesn't get separation. He could still be effective in the red zone because he can jump as a former BB player.

I think he was also valedictorian of his high school class which is always a harbinger for wild success.

Don't overlook the deep pattern prowess of Devin Hester! :?

I thought Monk ran between a 4.5 and 4.64 in the 40 at the combine.

According to ESPN, he ran a 4.45 but maybe that wasn't at the Combine - don't have Insider access.

I can't afford a Maxwell St. Polish so I damn sure can't become an ESPN insider.

I've seen a 4.41 time for Monk, but I think that was pre-combine--and possibly prior to his knee problems. I think 4.5 was his best time at the combine. Whatever the case, he is an intriguing prospect.

Yeah, the injuries are a concern and his work ethic but I had also read that after the knee injury his work ethic improved on the field and in the weight room so maybe the light turned on.

At least, I hope that is what is happening because that is all we have with this group - Hope and Mike Hass.

I'm not sure about Hass's football skills, but I am a big fan of his avocados.

If the Bears 850 yard, 6TD receiver is their #1, then the Bears have no #1 receiver.

Considering Berrian had 950 yards 5 TD last year, it's not hard to conceive this years leading WR on the Bears to have 850 yards. Especially for Hester who will probably see limited time at the start of the season at WR.

Hester did have 300 yards last year in VERY limited time. Why is so difficult to project him to have 3 times that if he starts 75% of the season vs. a hanful of plays each game (last year).

Btw, Steve Smith's 2nd year 872 yards 3 TDs. Hester doubled Smith's first year production at WR.

Steve Smith > Devin Hester. @WR anyway.

It's not hard to conceive at all and I have no problem with you projecting him with those stats if you want. I don't know if he'll get there but who knows.

But, while he may be the Bears #1 with those stats, he would be so only because the Bears WRs sucks. He would not be considered a #1 WR. If the Bears signed him this year to be a #1 WR as a free agent and he had those stats, everyone would say he was a huge signing bust.

I think any comparisons to Steve Smith are beyond premature. David Terrell had a better first year than either Hester or Smith. When Hester has 1400 yards and 10 TDs, I'll pay attention to comparisons.

No doubt I'm out on a limb. I totally agree that the rest of the WRs suck (especially Bradley but that's another discussion). I also agree 850 yards is not #1 resume material. But here's to hoping it does happen and the 2009 season with more practice and experience behind him DH will be a real #1.

...and just for the record DH is still proving he's got skillz in OTA's.

Quote:
Hester provided the highlight of the workout by tracking down a deep Kyle Orton pass that appeared to be overthrown with a superhuman burst. Later, the dynamic third-year pro was asked to recall the last time a quarterback threw a pass beyond his reach.

After pausing for a moment, Hester said with a smile: “I can’t even remember.”

OK, but no one doubts his downfield speed. His difficulties arise from his inability run all routes effectively, to beat jams off the line, to win dogfights for balls that are "up for grabs", etc. Only time will tell if he has developed these skills to a high level, but I doubt that he has--or will.

The Steve Smith analogies are just stupid. Smith is a much better route runner, has better hands, and is alot stronger and tougher. It's almost as silly as comparing Haas to Welker.

I'd be surprised if a Bears WR had more than 800 receiving yards next season.

That's as much a testament to the QBs as it is the WRs.

I dont really trust one guy on the offense at any of the skill positions. If used right, I think Clark and Olsen can be dangerous, but I also dont trust Turner. That offense is not looking in good shape at all. The offensive line is still a question mark too. If Williams is good, it'll be solid. If he struggles, so will the line.

If you really sit down and look at the Bears offense, it is frighteningly bad. They have one position that is above average and that is tight end (Kreutz is now living on reputation). Out of all this yuck, the WR position is the yuckiest.

That about sums it up, although I'm not sure I'd agree that the Bears are above average at tight end.

They are I think, they just don't utilize the position to the max.

At least use stats to back that up. I'll give you better route runner & better hands at this point. But who knows about the future? But how can you say stronger?

Out of college their combine stats are nearly identical.

Their size is nearly identical.
Smith 5'9" 185lbs
DH 5'11" 190lbs

DH doubled Smith's 1st years stats.

Time will tell but I wouldn't dismiss the possibility that Hester could be a 1,000 yard receiver in the future. Or end up with more total yards & TDs then Smith.

Then you're a fool. Anyone who knows anything about the WR's in this league will tell you Steve Smith is much stronger than Hester. All you have to do is look at them without their pads on. It's very obvious.

You dont read so well do ya slick?

Anyways, keep your pipedream of Hester turning into Steve Smith, its good for amusement. Frankly the honesty about the Bears offense in this thread was bugging me, not enough meatballness.

Hester continues to work hard to increase playing time. Turner says that he'd like Hester in 30-40 plays a game.

I'd want him to participate in 30-40 plays a game, too, if the alternative were putting Rashied Davis on the field.
