I was wondering about that but Instagrand worked there today (3/5) as did Dessman, McKinzie, and Galilean as well. I'd be working out in the parking lot instead. And most of these horses (21) going down were doing just that.

Didn't Arlington have a cluster of horses going down years ago?

I think the actual numbers show that synthetic tracks are not really safer than traditional dirt tracks. But obviously there's something wrong with this particular track. I suspect it will have to be rebuilt from the bottom up.

Track construction and maintenance is a real science. I'm talking about some issues with a harness track now. In the mid-90s we winter trained at a place called Winter Miles in Oviedo, FL. The track was pretty good, but it was only 5/8 mile and a lot easier to maintain than a huge sweeping mile track. When they sold the property for development my partner bought a training center up in Sorrento. It's a great mile training track. But when we got there in '98 or '99 it was a little deeper than you would like. That may be fine for the bones of a young horse, but we had a rash of soft tissue injuries that winter. I still think that track ruined the most expensive yearling I ever bought, a colt named Everlasting Art. Anyway, the trackman, Ron, has done a great job on the track and the place is probably the premier training center in Florida.

It looks like Hollendorfer got lucky in ducking Baffert's juice trains. That's the one silver lining here. It fucks up Baffert's campaigns.

TSG said changes for the track include:
• Trainers must seek permission 24 hours in advance to "work" a horse -- a timed high-speed training exercise.
• More track veterinarians have been hired to identify at-risk horses by evaluating past performances, workout data and physical inspection.
• A new position, director of equine welfare, was created to oversee the well-being of horses and lead a new rapid response team to investigate horse injuries.
• The track will require that veterinary records follow a horse through any trainer or ownership change.
• The first 15 minutes of training after the main track opens are reserved for horses working for an officially clocked time. This should allow faster horses going at a faster pace to encounter less traffic.
