If you lived in the suburbs, you said you were from Chicago. People who had a Chicago address got mad and said you weren't actually from Chicago. People from everywhere else besides "the region" thought you lived in a gang infested war zone.

If you lived in "the region" you said you were from the suburbs. People from Chicago and the actual suburbs got mad and said you weren't actually from Chicago. People from everywhere else were surprised that Valparaiso was considered a suburb of Chicago.

So, you eventually got shamed into naming your suburb when people asked, and then you had to triangulate it with three suburbs people have heard of, and the only three suburbs people had heard of were Schaumburg, Naperville, and Oak Brook(because of the mall) so you would say "It's near Schaumburg, Naperville, and Oak Brook" even though no suburb is close to all three of those.

So everyone at Purdue would endlessly argue over nonsense?

 Wow, that sounds like a great place, doesn't it?

Not pretentious enough to be Naperville. Not white enough to be Iowa.

I don't know this Chicago-"land" of which you speak. I honestly can't think of another place so named, except Cleveland, which (with apologies to Kirkwood) isn't ordinarily a positive comparison.

:?

Edit: And apologies to JORR. I hadn't seen his missive.

A few minutes' walk to the lake. Near two public golf courses, three marinas, a velodrome and an old country club.

If I'm in a good mood.

You'd think, but it doesn't stop people from trying.

And fwiw, if I'm in a less good mood, I add that my home is about 5-6 blocks from the encroachment of the brave gentrification pioneers.

To anyone in the Chicago city limits, Northshore, and suburbs, the descriptions is:

Take the Tollway past Six Flags....when you hit the Wisconsin border, exit and turn around.

My avatar says "Far East Suburbs". We're 62 miles due East of Kenilworth, THE reference for all things Chicago.

I have done the calculations and all Purdue suburbanites must claim to be from the border between Glendale Heights and Glen Ellyn.
