Angels LOVE long term HUGE deals

This one wont come back to bite them as quickly as the others and it's Mike Trout so you kinda gotta pay for some down years at the end.

BREAKING: Word out of Glendale is that #WhiteSox offer to Trout was for $51mil per year for five years, with accelerators for 50HR seasons to make deal worth $600 million. Sox feel they had richest offer on table.

Sure..Willie Mays in his prime, he's going to fall off a cliff in 3 years.

Nonsense: Here are his top 10 comps from Baseball Reference: F. Robby, Griffey, Mantle, Aaron, Cabrera, Cepeda, Ott, Matthews, Andruw Jones, Pujols.

For example, Frank Robinson was an effective hitter until age 38.

Could he have a devastating knee injury a la Mantle? Sure. But then you shouldn't ever sign anybody to more than a three year deal.

Call the extension 50MM for 7 years and 3MM for 3. It's still a good value. And again, how does Anaheim find a way of trading him without setting off a fan revolt?

Are you making bad takes on purpose now?

You think paying a guy 350 million for the age of 30-40 is wise?

Usually, no. But this is not "usually." This is a Willie Mays level player.

Sure..Willie Mays in his prime, he's going to fall off a cliff in 3 years.

At 30 he'll suddenly suck?

He'll be 28 by seasons end, he's got 3 more years( tops) of being a top 5 player . When he's 31 or 32 it will look like the pujols deal.

He's closer to a more productive Pete Rose than Pujols. Look at Rose from age 31-39...go ahead, look.

He's the best player since Bonds and Bonds had a .480 OBP at age 42. Trout will be fine.

The guy is averaging 9 WAR in his first seven seasons. "Falling off a cliff" would make him still a better player than Harper or Machado.

For perspecttive, Mantle was a fucking cripple from age 30-36, and still accumulated 36 WAR in 7 years.

Frank Robinson was still productive to age 38, and his best offensive season was at 30 and about an average season for Trout so far.

Trout hasn't even started taking steroids yet!

You sure about that?

Players peaks are much different than the steroid era, its back to being 25-29 instead of 25-38.

Trout will be good enough to stay productive like Miguel Cabrera, imo though.

Oddly enough, Trout is turning 27 this season. Pujols has completed 12 seasons since turning 27. Lets take a look at Pujols career starting at the age Trout is right now.

383 HRs Per year (32) per 162 (36)
1923 Hits (160) per 162 (177)
Ave .287
OBP .363
SLG .516
OPS .878
2 MVPS
5 top 10 MVPs
5 all stars

Adding Pujols ages 27-31 years makes him much better. Looking at only age 32+ make it a huge failure. But the Angels may have his best years.

So you think they're gonna go back to built-in sprinklers in the outfield? IIRC that's what Mantle ran into to tear up his knee proper horrorshow.

From what I remember Trout was basically a young Mickey Mantle reincarnate to kick off his career and now he's gotta be going beyond Mickey. I think he's gonna have a shot at Willie Mays' 155 WAR with one team (as he had 10.2 WAR last season in his 7th or 8th year, although you figure it's going to be hard to maintain that kind of production once he gets into his 30s...)

Also I think he's gonna be the only player up until this point to hit 500mil, as the closest you're gonna get is MigCab hitting 400mil by the end of his wonderful deal in detroit. Guys like Greinke and Stanton are gonna stall around ~320mil by the end of their deals circa age 37-38, then you've got guys like Price only making it to 271mil... And of course Harper and Machado will end up around 350-400mil. And then for the next few years you figure its gonna be hard for anyone to top Trout's $36mil/yr AAV cuz it's gonna be like "what, you think you're better than Trout?"

your salary big dogs = Trout; Cabrera; Pujols; Kershaw; Greinke; Price; Scherzer; Sale; Harper; Strasburg; Heyward; Stanton. Does any name there stand out to you?

Also, it's pretty cool that #27 on the Angels goes Vlad, Trout, done. You figure the Angels will eventually do a dual # retirement a la Maddux/Jenkins cuz Vlad did way more in Los Angeles of Anaheim than Maddux did in Chicago.

I don't think mantle was ever as big as Trout, you guys seem to think a 240 lb dude that can move like a MFer won't nosedive with age.

Bryant is going to be due $300+mil, especially if he rebounds with a big 2019 season.
