i don't think anyone who reads a thing on this message board has room to talk. that said, i follow both on twitter, listen to deadcast and PMT thats about it for either site.

the reason i bring barstool into this is because its apparent that is deadspin's archenemy yet as sophmoric as barstool is, they are a pretty progressive company ran by progressive people but know the sports audience pretty well product content to that end and comparitively succeeding. where as deadspin is continually trying to inject progressivism into sports and or take the fun out of sports (which is not what they were when they first started and when i began following). as a result they are getting passed around company to company and have very little engagement comparatively.

That's not exactly true. Deadspin was bought after a lawsuit by Univision. Univision may be selling them as they want to concentrate on what made them successful with Hispanic audiences.

Barstool was effectively sold to the Chernin Group so each has had one owner so far outside of the founders.

The difference is that Deadspin is losing money for its owner and is also seeing its valuation drop as Univision tries to sell it with no takers.

Barstool is profitable and seeing its value increase. You don't have to like Barstool, but it's clear that one of these digital media companies is finding success while the other isn't.

Profitable barstool had to take another $15 million dollars from the company that already owned a majority of it to, I don't know, start streaming amatuer boxing tournaments or something.

Barstool has had just as many pretty substantial failures. The ESPN deal. Even now you can point to them getting a SIRIUS channel which ironically is the same type of thing you mocked as being a dead medium.

They sell a lot of t-shirts though!

Chernin saw an opportunity to increase their take on a profitable company and took it. All indications are the company is cash flow positive.

It's a good sign for Barstool that they are able to find multiple streams of revenue whether that is live event tickets, paid streams, merch, advertising, and premium features. One of the reasons digital media is imploding is that the companies tend to only have single streams of advertising revenue and if that doesn't deliver, they are DOA. Those differing revenue streams are what make Barstool successful as a business.

yeah getting more cash is not a bad thing. especially when it comes from an existing owner.

But like i said, all i was using it as was an example of its ability to engage and grow its base in the same space. They do that by not politicizing sports as a company. I'm sure we can assume where most of these people stand politically but they don't wear that on their sleeve which i believe is attractive to most people.

An understanding of Deadspin's voice and a strong pitch for what you would add to it is just cracking me up. You're Julie DiDeadspin, there's not a whole lot to understand/grasp about your "voice"
