So if they get this done, the service time starts now and he's on the Opening Day roster? I realize this sounds like a dumbass question for those of you familiar with MLB service time and contracts.

The deal will be for six years and then include two team options, Passan reported. Those eight years of club control are significant because it means the White Sox bought out what amounts to one year of Jimenez's free agency. The deal is for $43 million over the six years, Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic reported.
Jimenez agreeing to a long-term deal means service time is of no concern to the White Sox, who could then place him on the Opening Day roster instead of keeping him in the minor leagues to delay his free agency.

Nice. I mean fuck the Sox and Rick Hahn still, but that's good.

If he signs a deal, then service time doesn't matter as he is under contract.

edit; Sorry RFDC. Was on my phone and didn't see that.

They’re trying to put a salve on the fact they went cheap on Machado by throwing the fans this bone .

What do you mean throwing the fans a bone? Eloy would have missed like 10 games.

He also could have told the Sox to go pound sand and that he was going to go after a megadeal. But as I said for a guy who hasn't even swung at a major league pitch, this is serious dough. He can set himself and his family up for life even if he snaps his ankle on Opening Day and never plays after that. Its a good deal for all involved.

It's a good PR move.

See FF's last post vs everything else he's posted recently.

I know Sox fans want Eloy up on opening day, but does he even warrant a spot after that dreadful spring?

It's a good move for the Sox under the current CBA. That could change, but I think this deal is smart.

Probably not, but who is better and should take his place? Wouldn't you rather have your supposed super slugger in the makings learning and taking his lumps at the big league level (especially this year) vs riding a bus for two weeks in the minors?

I wonder if he would have taken it if he had dominated spring training. Maybe a little adversity gave him pause.

That is a good question.

If he ends up being a bust the Sox are going to get hammered for giving this much money to an unproven prospect.

It is a gamble, but I think it is a good gamble for the Sox. Pretty much everyone thinks this kid is a stud.

I am more surprised that Eloy took it and didn't wait to show how good he is and then demand more dollars in the deal.

Think about how poor his family on the Dominican are etc. He can do whatever he wants now that he needs to.

No doubt the appeal of money right now is huge.

As long as he doesn’t open up a fucking taqueria down there he should be fine

I know, pernicious myths, but this doesn't seem right. The Sox are betting that his shitty spring spooked him and they're getting him for a good price IF he turns out to be good. Has a Scottie Pippen feel.

Pretty sure it's pretty cheap to open up a taqeria in the Domincan.

There’s no question he will be. Look at the organization he’s a part of. We have 8 days left to celebrate the Eloy era. I’m enjoying it.

Still not as good as the Maybe Machado era

If he stays in the OF and hits well enough to be a marginal all-star, it's a fair deal. If he becomes this generation's Billy Williams, he's leaving a lot of money on the table. If he can't play defense and has to move to DH by year 5, then the White Sox will have overpaid.

But this deal is similar in some ways to the Rizzo one. Rizzo had personal reasons why he wanted stability, stemming having recovered from cancer. Eloy may have reasons to take this chunk of money and get his family into comfort and safety.

Plus, nobody is quite sure what the CBA holds with respect to arbitration years.

No that era sucked for us smart fans who knew we never had a shot at him.

I do have to laugh at the bouquets thrown at Hahn/Theo/Smart GM XYZ with these deals. What a master stroke to sign a young guy who has zero leverage. Takes an MBA to pull that off
