I don’t follow MLB closely. Is Selig and now Manfred as a combo as bad as Bettman? Opening Day used to be everything. They fuck this up more every year.

Can’t wait til 2026 when two random teams play in Australia in February for no reason and everyone else starts a month later.

Something is up. MLB is gonna trot out the fucking As and Ms to open the season? Push the opener back to May 1 and open with Yankees Red Sox. Srsly.

It’d be funny if the NFL copied this. Let the Jags and Titans go play in Beijing in early August while everyone else is in early preaseason mode and make it count.

They've been doing this for years. Yankees and Mariners opened in Tokyo in 2004.

Silly but no big deal.

Opening Day is still Opening Day.

This is an okay appetizer.

Having it so far before the rest of the games starting is stupid.

It would've significantly shortened the blackface thread.

Still waters, man.

Fucking this all up so you can use Ichiro as a prop cuz he’s older than WWN but willing to go out there for a PA. Shameful.

True. But it's still dumb on MLB's part

It reminds one of a couple of early October days in 1980.

I think it's cool to host major league baseball in Tokyo. I remember them doing this in 2008 I think? Red Sox were involved? What I don't understand is (after looking at the schedule) the Mariners go from Spring Training in Peoria to playing real games in Tokyo and then to Seattle next Monday and Tuesday to play MORE EXHIBITION GAMES against the Padres -- then back to real games starting Thursday.

I'm guessing MLB does this so players can vacation and see Tokyo and then have enough time to get re-acclimated to the time change/jet lag when back in the U.S.

7HR combined thus far in a game and a half. Ryon Healy and Mitch Haniger have gone yard today. Standing ovations for Ichiro groundouts... They're saying he might retire after the game today.

Yep, they started doing this 20 years ago knowing Ichiro would retire setting it ALL UP for the big 2019 pay off.

Its also stupid that the A's and Mariners play meaningful games, then have to travel back to the states to play even more useless Spring Training Games.

That is the part I don't get. If it counts then do it to start the season properly fly home and start another series in a couple days. Or make this one an exhibition series.

I'm sad we didn't get a whistler post asking if anyone went to opening day? What airline did you fly? How did you buy your tickets? Did you eat any Japanese food?
