 Not that I recall. I wouldn't equate that with what he said to me anyway. Not that I'm looking for some kind of support... I just don't want it to be misconstrued that I ever said anything even close to what he said to me. That's false.

I too got bored with the thread. But as I mentioned, imho there is one overarching reason many black posters don't post here, and it's often directly tied to dumbass arguments like what is or isn't blackface, what's inherently wrong with using the word n@gger, or why shouldnt blacks just shut up about it, even though a person of color usually don't raise those issues here in the first place. Or occasionally get angry about it. It's just damned tiring.

Or it becomes a cutesy expansion of Reddit, 4Chan, and it's bigoted memes here that 98% of people don't want to be harangued with. And it's always the same handful of people who then stalk the few blacks here and spread the bullshit throughout this board. And their little band follow in lockstep and falsely claim all kinds of crap.

But rarely venture to sports or generally innocuous threads without the usual b.s..

You know, as a family, we rented the movie "Instant Family" last night. It's about a couple with no kids who decide to foster a child...which turns into three siblings. It's pretty formulaic, tugging at heartstrings, having some laughs while mixing in all the new family dynamics.

On top of it, the foster parents are renovating a home(we're currently renovating a home) and we have an adopted daughter(black, special needs) who is now 10 and a son who is 7.

It was incredible how many similar situations and conversations there were that we kept laughing out loud about. It was very much like laughing at ourselves. That is, until the eldest foster kid had a small fit, ran out and slammed a door. I joked about this art imitating life and compared it to our daughter...

Well, that was that...turns out our kid was being affected by these scenes in a completely different way than the rest of us. My playful sarcasm set her off. It turned into a major event with her losing complete control of her emotions. She cried, screamed, took some swings, landed a couple(I'm fine, thanks for asking) and had to be subdued by my wife. It turned into a learning experience for all. Especially myself. While my initial reaction was to tell her to chill the fuck out, we see funny things about all of us in this movie, we're all one family and none of that is going to change. She vented on why she was upset. By the end I had a fuller understanding and respect for how seemingly innocuous images/events affect people completely differently. Hopefully, I have become a better dad and we have a stronger family because of it.

Point being, whether I think the Flav costume is offensive or not is irrelevant.

Guy probably could have gotten away with it if not for the public relations issue of white cops murdering black people. You can kill them or be them, but not both.

I've said this before, but thanks for sharing your family's perspectives here, and what your family has done is beyond cool.

And it sounds very much like you have gotten out more than you've signed on to do. I really wish you all well.

Do you like the movie, find it entertaining, or have a different view of it now?

Once things settled down it was discussed whether we should restart the movie where I stopped it. After much reassurance that our family unit was incomplete without her, that there was no chance she could be "sent back", our daughter said she wanted to for sure watch the rest. It didn't hurt that I said the other option was watching NCAA basketball.

It was pretty enjoyable overall, much better than expected. It was definitely worth renting.

From the "damn I'm getting old" file...the grandfather is played by the kid who played "Danny" in Caddyshack.

And then he ruins a great series of posts with that. He's probably younger than me, too, which makes me feel worse. This GoldenJag needs to be more sensitive to my feelings.

This was cool to read: "After much reassurance that our family unit was incomplete without her, that there was no chance she could be "sent back", our daughter said she wanted to for sure watch the rest."

Great post and points. Only thing I would quibble with is the "irrelevant." It's not wrong, but just an overstatement. I don't think our intents or how we take something is ever irrelevant in the West. It's always part of the equation, even if it is the least important part or the bulk of its importance comes from our awareness of it (so we can learn and grow, like in FlyingJet's post below). But if we start erasing the relevance of our own interpretations and intents, we are headed backwards in many ways.

Wow, what a great post. I love reading posts like this because they're inspiring (especially after reading a highly interesting thread that turned into an absolute train wreck). But they also make me realize how selfish I am, how I could never do any of this. What a great dad GJ is.

Perhaps "irrelevant" was too strong. Relatively speaking though, irrelevant fits. Still, my opinion, as a white American man, is a lot less relevant than that of a black American man or woman.

Being an Ike Reilly evangelist is an honorable undertaking!

You know, he just played Lincoln Hall on St Patrick's Day.
