Alcindor :D

Tony Kornheiser the other day put David Thompson and Bill Walton on the top of his list, whom I don't really remember in college myself.

And to think that in practice, Alcindor and a handful of equally ineligible freshmen routinely beat the returning national championship team that would go on to repeat the title run.

Google Walton at UCLA...I have mentioned that the kid from 76ers use his low post game instead of shooting the trey....Thompson and Towes invented the alley oop 8)

No need, I remember how much of a treat it was to watch him on the rare Portland t.v. game and occasional sports highlights. I just wish could've seen him match up against Kareem in their prime more.

The writing about them both in SI back then painted one helluva picture though.

:D

Right. I’m not deluded enough by present day hype to actually think Melo and Zion are the best college players ever

Come on Walt!

The most physically impressive college player I ever saw was Corey Maggette or Derrick Rose until Williamson.

Best player is tough... I remember A.I. and Ray Allen having some of the best battles in the Big East. Used to get physically excited over those games.

I guess I'd probably go Big Dog or Laettner for best overall.

Yes. Actually, I didn't see them much in the pros.

A lot of it has to do with time and place and nostalgia for meaningful Illinois hoops but I really cannot imagine ever watching a college basketball game as good as that again.

Big Dog isn't half the college player Zion is. And Big Dog was awesome. Zion, OTOH, is having one of the greatest seasons in CBB history.

Are you sure? Statistically Big Dog is pretty far ahead and he wasn't playing with an all star team.

How is Big Dog ahead of Zion statistically? I'll take the guy who averages 22.5ppg on 68FG% over the guy who got 27.5 while shooting 49%. Plus the first guy is also a great defender.

Yeah statistically Big Dog isn’t close to far ahead. Rick smoking immoral drugs again.

That's because you are averaging both years of Robinson when he took it to another level his second year. Robinson was far better his last year in school than Zion is.

Robinson:
30.3 ppg, 10.1 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.6 spg, .9 bpg,
Zion:
22.5 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 2.1 apg, 2.1 spg, 1.7 bpg

That's with Zion playing with an All Star team that is still one of the favorites to win the NCAA tournament even if he had not played.

There are guys all over the country who average around 22 points a game every year. Zion doesn't even lead his team in scoring. 30 points at the high major level is pretty amazing. The fact that he did that while averaging 10 rebounds a game is better than Zion.

Another interesting question to me is best NBA player (that played college) you ever saw that you did not see in college. Many great players were under the radar until shining in the league. Example I do not ever recall seeing Karl Malone or Charles Barkley before the pros ever. And I watched a hell of a lot more ball back then than now.

best I ever saw in person is Ewing

best on TV is Danny Manning. I think people forget how head and shoulders he was over the rest of the world when he stepped on the court prior to his knee injuries.

The list is lacking in big men, which is a product of recency bias. A big man used to make you king of the world in college. Get a dominant center and a mature point guard and you were a contender not that long ago.

The Admiral was unstoppable and when you talk about being surrounded by nobody, the other 11 players on his team were fringe D 1 players. Think about the impact he had. Navy has never sniffed that kind of success at any point in its history before or after. Take a look at the guy who is one of his co starters. He looks like some hump in a rec league

Image

Hakeem was great but also surrounded by greatness so it is sometimes difficult to tell. He could have existed in any era of basketball, which isn't true of all others.

Let me also throw in a nomination for Isiah. Dean Smith and Bobby Knight always retarded the individuality of their players but Isiah shone, even after leaving as a sophomore.

So you think it's wrong that I included Robinson's freshman year when comparing him to a guy who only played his freshman year?

Also, we are talking about the best college players we've ever seen...that means a career, not a single season.

And even if we just used Robinson's soph year vs Zion he is still WAY behind Zion as a player.

  that's cute that you are using raw stats to make your argument.

Here are some really interesting stats for you:

Big Dog .523efg%
Zion .710efg%

Big Dog .566TS%
Zion .705TS%

It's really not even close. What Zion is doing on an efficiency level puts him on a totally different level from Big Dog.

  Teammates have no bearing on this discussion. Zion would dominate at this level no matter who he played for. It's not like he is getting open looks because his teammates are spreading the floor and demanding attention from defenders. And you overrate Zion's teammates. The only other allstar on the team is Barret. The other so called all stars are both overrated freshman who had mediocre years and can't shoot.

Name all the players around the country who average 22ppg while being as efficient as Zion?
