IMO Jimenez is gonna be a real good player, 6 million per would be a big salary drop over the the next 6 or 7 years. I'd take it if I was Eloy but he'll regret it in a few years.

I cannot see how anyone criticizes this move. Foolish.

The reward outweighs any risk tenfold.

If you place his first three years at the usually $600,000 salary, you've got $73.2M left for what would have been his 4 arbitration years and his first FA year. That is $14.5M a year.

That is likely going to be an AAV steal, considering it isn't hard to imagine his arbitration years, 1-4, looking something like $9M, $12M, $15M, $18M and then I feel safe predicting $20M+ AAV for any free agent contract he would have signed. Even at $20M, those 5 years right there are $74M.

To avoid the PR issues....to lock him in for an extra year...a content star rookie being up Day 1 on a young team where vibes are important... great move for the Sox.

If he signs a deal, then service time doesn't matter as he is under contract.

edit; Sorry RFDC. Was on my phone and didn't see that.

Signing a deal doesn't negate service time. It's just that he is signing a long enough deal that it covers what would be his first year or two of free agency. So, in the long run, this could be a huge savings for the Sox. They avoid three years of arbitration and at least the first year of free agency. Eloy is set for life and the Sox save probably more than the total value of this contract and can start him opening day.

It's not the move specifically.

It's the "hey, look! we negotiated this long-term deal with a prospect who had zero leverage and who we would've shoved into the minors to fuck with his service clock. so don't worry about us fucking up free agency at all. we did this thing!"

This is a pretty long winded way of agreeing. Clearly, Frank is pointing out that service time doesnt matter anymore as far as Eloy's Free agency, which is correct.

Well, a lot of times teams don't get a player to sign like this.

There are club options that would bring it up to 8 years and 77 million.

I'd rather this than, "hey we offered our ROY and MVP $200million and he turned it down," like the Cubs and Kris Bryant.

For most teams I would agree. But with the negativity that surrounds the Sox fan base right now towards their front office, they will def get hammered over this deal if he is a bust.

Because "everyone" has full and clear understanding of rookie deals, service time, arbitration eligibility and free agency...gotcha.

In terms of answering FF's question about service time for Eloy playing on Opening Day, the service time does not matter. Of course the deal doesn't negate any sort of service time.
