I don't mean a "Jay Hilgenberg was a backup his rookie year" type of backup. I mean a Josh Bellamy, Cliff Levingston, Tony Graffanino type of backup. For hockey players, a #5/6 defenseman or a 4th line forward who didn't regularly kill penalties.

Tony Kukoc, Ben Gordon, Taj Gibson

David Ross, Dwight Smith, Javy Baez, Albert Almora, Eric Karros

Pisa Tinoisamoa, Frank Omiyale, Brendan Ayenbedajio, Ricky Manning, Jr., Jim Harbaugh, Henry Melton, Nick Kwiatkowski

What the fuck - Baez, Almora, Karros, Gordon, Harbaugh all started.

Dwight Smith started for a bit, but shouldn't have.

Ayenbedajio is a good one.

I struggle with directions.

I can vouche for this. Leash once parked in a parking lot and it took us 3 hours to find his car afterward.

Kukoc wins by default.

I guess so but it seems like a weak argument. To put it another way, of course Ginobli was a backup so he’s the best backup of all time but he’s also one of THE BEST players of his entire era so the whole backup label feels warped. Same with Kukoc on a much smaller scale and shorter period of time.

It’s Geoff Blum my friend. #2005

First, Manu couldn't hold McHale's nuts. Or the Microwave's.

And in good faith, no one title team backup is worthy of recognition imo.

McHale wasn’t a career backup and I’ll forgive you for being wrong about Microwave/Manu as I’ve forgiven you for your many wrong Spur assertions over the years my good friend

Put Westbrook and Stephen Adams on the very worst team in the NCAA. Do they make the Tournament and if they do, what seed are they, and do they win it all?

2 of 4 of us say they win it all and 3 out of 4 of us say they get a 1 seed.

Im in the latter group. I think they get a 1 seed but lose before the Championship game and I’m tempted to lean with the lone guy who says they would be more of a 4 or 5 seed.

What say you?
The worst team in the NCAA? That is probably Chicago State. Chicago State got blown out in like 90% of their games.

Westbrook and Adams, playing under NCAA rules, would probably put them more in the 5 to 8 seed range. It could be worse if they really couldn't adjust to not traveling/carrying every time along with charging actually being a thing. I think the big problem would be on defense though. They could only guard two players. Even if they shut down those guys you have three massive mismatches on the floor.

I think McHale gets in, though, due to his role for several years on a top-flight team. But career. I know what that word means, so . . . yeah, ok, maybe not. Hmmm.....

Xander Hollander called McHale the most expensive sub since the USS Los Angeles

Best one-time sub: Jesse Owens ("der ass-kicking in das Vaterland")

One season: Earl Morrall?

Are you going to argue that traveling, charging and carrying are not called much tighter in college basketball?

You'd have to define much but yeah I don't think there's a big difference except maybe for carrying, but then again I don't see that called often in college either. Traveling and especially charging are called about as frequently as they should be in the NBA. (yes, I'm aware you can find one or two clips with laughable traveling that didn't get called but that is by far the exception, not the rule)

I'm not arguing if the NBA is better or worse but it is undeniable that it has the most liberal traveling rules that exist, whether officially or unofficially.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2771640-traveling-in-the-nba-the-price-of-making-art

Now, I know you'll say these are just cherry picked examples but you see examples of it all the time in the NBA. In the NBA, the officials basically ignore it unless it gives a serious advantage to the player, and even that seems to be getting stretched with guys like James Harden who constantly does moves that would be immediate travels in college.

As for charging, it's called far more often for the defense than it is in the NBA. Charges aren't really entertaining unless you want the team to lose that got one.

The major point is that college games are called more tightly than NBA games, and I would be surprised that anyone could watch a few of each and not think that was right.

Well, you did correctly predict my response to that article.

Yes it’s called tighter in college. No, I don’t think it’s by a significant margin and I especially don’t think there’s enough of a discrepancy to suggest NBA players would have any trouble at all adjusting.

So the real question is, if you add Westbrook and Adams to Chicago St how would they do?

I took a look at Chicago State, they won 3 games this year. They lost 20 straight to end the year and only 2 of those games were decided by less than 10 points. Early on they played Indiana and lost by 50, lost by 35 to Notre Dame, did only lose by 16 to Bradley, lost by 35 to DePaul, lost by 40 to Northwestern. Geez, that's a bad team.

Westbrook would obviously be a big boost, think of what Ja Morant did this year and multiply that by quite a bit. The shorter 3pt line would benefit him quite a bit. But, he would also have to deal with the same double and triple teams that hurt Trae Young last year. As for Adams, he'd be a big help on the glass and defensively as well as in PnR, but he'd be swarmed whenever he got the ball in the post, something he doesn't have to deal with in the pros.

I imagine they would definitely win their shitty conference and get an auto bid to the tourney. Westbrook would probably score over 35 per game + double digit assists. They'd probably get 20ppg from Adams. That's 50-60 point from 2 guys. All they gotta do is get the other bums to hit a few open shots and score 20-30 points and they would be able to play with just about anyone. But, if westbrook had one of his frigid cold shooting days they'd be completely fucked.

I don't think they would win it all, feels like just too much pressure on 1 guy to do all the work and too many chances in the tourney for that approach to fail. Maybe if it was Westbrook and George instead.

I've seen Trae get called for carrying 3x this season. Never saw him get called for carrying in college.

If I'm playing a team that is Westbrook and Adams and three Chicago State grunts, I'm going to play a triangle+2 hybrid zone/man, and use a wave of reserves to try to bait Westbrook into getting ejected.
