I think it was Jed who said they've played great but have just had some bad 7th and 8th innings...reminded me of Wannstedt's "we were fine, other than the 80-yard TD and pic-6 we gave up at the end."

I think the problem is the Cubs are scoring too fast

The offense has been good. Timely hitting evens out over 162.

The rotation has a high floor and the bullpen will be decent.

So the biggest issue from last year by far (offense) looks to be better.

I thought it was the NL Central?

The Cubs may well win the division, but I'll take the under on 95 wins.

I think everyone assumes that the Cubs are gonna win 90+ games because they're the Cubs and that's just what they do. Right now you're 1-4 and, IIRC, you've already lost two Lester starts which has to be a big/ger deal when you have no idea what you're gonna get from Darvish over the course of a season, you're counting on a 35/+ year old Cole Hamels coming off of essentially a reverse Haren-esque season, and then Hendricks had one really kickass year but outside of that he's more of a depth/innings-eater/let-our-offense-beat-theirs guy than a "fuck you hit this" guy, and then oh yeah you've got the guy who you traded Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease for.. who hasn't started a game yet over a week into the season.

And even scarier than that = the Cubs' offense has been pretty darn good feasting on mediocre to shit pitching.. what's going to happen on days where you face good pitching and live and die by solo HRs? Plus your top-3 uninjured bullpen guys have all stepped up and individually blown games already.

The Cubs gotta pray that someone steps up and takes a rotation/bullpen spot by sheer force of quality, then hope another guy or two can do the same.... All while hoping that their offense can look more like 2016 than 2018. And in a division where the brewers are already 5-1 and only need to find a few arms to essentially displace the Cubs by outcubbing the Cubs? Sheeeeeit.

Maybe. Probably. Could be. Not sure I would bet on that, but it wouldn't surprise me.

90 or 91 wins is likely not going to be enough to win the "NL North" though.

Sox home opener is tomorrow, Bob. You either need to put down the bottle, or pick one up. This has been a real rough thread for you.

Frank is right. 90 wins will get Maddon fired.

Heard a stat on Kaps show today . Should the Cubs drop the next 2 to fall to 1-6, they’re have been 68 teams in the last 35 to start 1-6 or worse . 12 teams have been able to finish above .500 for the year , 3 have made the playoffs . These next 2 are big games .

Especially considering that they're primed and ready to be down 7 games to the brewers by the end of the weekend (assuming that they're 1-8 at that point)

I used to jokingly refer to this team as the nu-90s-braves figuring they'd win one championship and find ways to lose in October every year for a loooooooonnnggggg time (exalting THE PLAN™®© and all) --- but my joke had one fundamental flaw.... The 90s Braves had pitching. The Cubs don't. Even tho it's much harder to carry on with good pitching for any significant period of time, that's the honest-to-god ticket to (fantasy) baseball success.

Well the first Lester start was indeed a win, but an 11-10 type win which means that you ended up taxing your bullpen ahead of a second game where your starter only went 2.2 innings. Ergo, it could still be claimed that you kinda wasted a Lester start there.

Also what was I wrong about with Hendricks? Does he really/truly have transcendental stuff? Is the guy inducing a lot of swing and misses with his overpowering movement and velocity? I'm definitely not saying that he's not a good pitcher, it's just that in my ideal world he's an awesome #4 pitcher and a quality #3 who you can toss out there after a couple of guys with "fuck you / hit this" stuff. Regardless of how we wanna define nebulous terms like "fuck you pitchers" do you really think Hendricks is the guy who can rise up and carry a team like, say, 2015-16 arrieta?

Btw I just glanced up and the score jumped from 1-0 0 out top 5 runners on 1st and 2nd to 5-0 0 out top 5 runners.on first and second.... What in the actual fuck?

If an announcement is made in a forest and nobody cares, does it make any sense to serve eggs and pancakes on the same plate? Who the hell wants to get syrup on their over-medium eggs? Not me, by gum ... which is usually where they keep the Tic Tacs at the register inside da Jewels .... at least they used to, I don't know if they still do ... last time I was there I ended up being distracted by a tomcat fucking a Jose Ole frozen burrito by the curb just outside the window, which I imagine makes the cat burrito as well, since it's Jose and not, say, Juanita. Good morning, Chicago.

Cubs will have to go 88-66 the rest of the way just to win 90 games. Better find some pitching fast.

I have never seen a fan base go so wildly from disaster to ecstasy with every single game as the modern Cub fan.
