I'd rather talk about what you do.

Seriously, you'd be the guy I ask my husband about on the way home. So that guy with his shirt unbuttoned asked me who's the most famous person I went to high school with. What's his deal? I was like I don't fucking know so I excused myself to get a drink but I don't want to talk to him at parties anymore.

Plus he'd spend the entire time staring at your chest.

You're the goofball here for not wanting to have small talk about what do you do, not me. Who the goes to parties and talks about famous people that attended their high school?

I don't think anybody famous went to my high school... how about you?...Cool. Good talk! It's like talking about who wore it better in People magazine.

I am kind of with Joe Orr Road Rod on this one, though I don't find myself at cocktail parties often. Who cares what you do, everybody does something. If it doesn't come up organically, why make people discuss their work in a social setting?

In my line of work, you learn that a lot of people have a great idea for a million dollar app, but they also don't have the desire to even write it all down and send it to me by email.

bunch of misanthropes

you work your way through a few different topics to find a connection with someone in a new conversation. Then you use that point of connection to expand to other areas of commonality. Sometimes it ends up being a nice conversation and you have met a new person who you like.

But "what do you do" is a shitty topic. I don't want to hear about your fuckin' job unless you're an astronaut or a big league ballplayer. Otherwise I agree with you. It helps to have a lot of knowledge about a lot of stuff, as I do. I also like to find out where someone grew up. I usually know at least a fact or two about whatever place it is. You could test me, but I'd be accused of using Google. Next time we meet in person we can try it out.

The most famous person to attend my high school is JORR.

Your little anecdotal stories about work are far more entertaining than what famous person attended your high school. I wouldn't want to hear answers from dolphin on either question.

Man, I can’t get over the fact that I walked the same hallways as JORR. It gives me a whole nother perspective on my time there. Although much of it is a blur because I smoked weed on a daily basis back then.

Go, Go Gordon, Go
Your fighting spirit we all know
While on the field
Or on the track
The Mighty Rams will smoke some crack
For Gordon!

We had a very long conversation the first time we met. First conversations with ladies are different altogether. All you have to do is point them in the right direction and they will willingly talk about themselves. When they slow down just give some kind of acknowledgement that you were listening by referencing something from earlier in the conversation and off they go again.

I have a little recollection of the first time we talked, I was pretty hammered. I'm usually not the one to talk about myself I usually ask questions but I could see me rambling on and that situation. You're very quiet, not unsocial or anything but not what you'd expect. It's even hard to tell if you're having fun even if people know you're not having a bad time.

I usually try to ask people about things I know that they're interested in or general conversations. Like I know the Derby is coming up I might ask somebody about that or Summers coming up and I might ask if they have vacation plans or something like that. Sports or kids depending on the person etc.
