OK:

Al's and Buona, easily. At least I know they will be properly cooked and edible.

The last time I ate at Portillo's, I ordered an Italian sausage with mozz. The bun was dry and not toasted, the sausage was so overcooked it was literally crunchy, and they put shredded mozz which wasn't melted at all. Horrible.

Saying Portillos is inedible is just dumb. Keep trolling.

It is?

It is clearly the best large Italian beef and hot dog place. It is much closer with burgers but a lot of places do burgers well.

There are better small scale operations but they don't have to cook on a massive scale.

Al's Beef is 1000x better than Portillo's.

I don't think a massive hot dog fast food place exists so nothing to compare.

Let me set the record straight on Portillo's as I often have to do around here. It's a solid place, good for a massive fast food place, but I can guarantee that anything you can order at a Portillo's you can find a better tasting version at a small Ma and Pa hot dog/beef/burger place located within 5 miles of the Portillo's you are at.

People are just too lazy and scared to put the effort in to find those places, would rather just settle with what they know as long as it's "good enough".
Which is exactly why Portillo's is a good "baseline" place.

I've never gotten the sausage. There are many things I would rather have. However, to say I'm trolling saying Portillos is better than Al's and Buona but then to say that Portillos is so bad you can't eat it is pretty funny. At least you gave some names.

I do like Als at least. It's probably closer than I said before but I'll still take Portillos. There is no way Buona is better.

there may be a tremendous amount of variation from location to location with all of these joints.

Sammies > Portillo's.

I do like their fries and their hot dogs are decent. I do not care for their burgers or beefs.

The Bootie beef sammich from Olando's is the way to go.

Buono is disgusting. Portillo's is ok, not bad, close to good. Al's is great, the only one that stacks up with the small ma and pa beef shops.

For any particular food item on Portillo's menu, there is a place in Chicago that either does it better, or does it just as well and cheaper.

For example, I think that Johnnie's on North does a far better Italian sausage, and I routinely stop at the McDonald's between the Portillo's and my house to pick up french fries and a $1 32oz Diet Coke.

But... there is noplace that does Portillo's entire menu better and has the location reach of being 20 minutes from large swaths of the metro region.

I was a BIGFAN of Burger King's previous attempt at crinkle fries that were named "Satisfries."

Portillo's is consistently fine but not nearly as good as individual local places like Johnnie's or Gene & Jude's (plus Portillo's is almost twice the price).

Sammie's good in my book, not the best but agree with Many that Portillo;s highly overrated.

you have the taste buds of a six year old. Their "fries" are like the frozen ones my grandma used to make in the oven. Ironically, Culver's are the same style but not quite as terrible, but still bad.

Right, me and the several people in this thread and people all over who love their fries. WE are wrong and you are correct.

There is no such thing as inedible fries by the way. The worst french fry is still good. Culvers fries are fine.

What fries do you like?

a lot of stupidity in this post. No such thing as bad French fries? WTF, have you been to Burger King? Those are the very definition of inedible.

Culver's fries also suck and are pretty close to inedible.

Portillo's fries are solid for a frozen fry, but in no way compare to places like Red Hot Ranch who are making their fries fresh each order.

Im not listening to french fry reviews by a jewish guy. We'll call you when we're discussing the best value meals.

best value can be found at McDonalds, home of the $1 large coke.

As an old friend once said many years ago, "McDonalds coke is no joke"

True story about Portillos. When my mom was very young she lived in Lincolnwood. She was neighbors with Dick Portillo. He used to have a little hot dog cart that he pushed around the neighborhood. My grandparents and all the other neighbors used to make fun of him and his "crappy little hot dog push cart business"

Between that and my dad laughing at his cousin when he started Lettuce Entertain You, my immediate family has not done too well in the restaurant business.

having the urge to make America great again I went over to one of the last old school independent joints in the Loop: Off the Tracks on Wells. Pretty standard double cheeseburger. I saw the fries were the standard frozen crinklecut so I took a pass on that. They make some huge breakfast platters but since I don't have hangovers much anymore, I can't see partaking in much of that.
