Gonna go out on a limb, Stan takes A Dman with the #3 pick.

There is a good one but they take so damn long to develop and they have a hoard of young ones already. Unless he packages a few of them in a deal they are going to end up burying a few of them in Rockford for life. Interesting rumor that Q wants Keith in Florida.

This is like when we missed Ovechkin and Malkin at 1 and 2 but got Cam Barker.

I saw this news on twitter and perked up but it sounds like it’s not worth the bandwagon brigade’s attention.

Gotta hard pass on a Russian who doesn't really want to come here.

Scotty's perennial Stanley Cup contender rosters his first decade in Detroit always has 4+ Russians on em. By the time they win in 2008, they're down to Datsyuk as the lone Russian on the team. Seven Swedes tho. So somewhere along the way Bowman soured on Russians in favor of Swedes. Yzerman down in Tampa keeps a grip of Russians on his rosters, 4 this season? Last year's Stanley Cup winning Caps team had 3 or 4.

I don't think Datsyuk liked being the lone Russian on the Detroit roster at the end. Pavel started bugging out back to Russia to play in the KHL as soon as the Wings season ended his later years in the NHL. Like he'd be on a plane the night after the last game and practically skating for some Russian team the next night. I think the fellow countrymen on the roster thing played into the Wings choosing to go with Franzen over Hossa. Probably didn't wanna alienate the rest of the Swedes on the roster by cutting their golfing buddy loose. Plus I think Hossa wanted them to resign his fellow Slovakian Kopecky if Hossa stayed in Detroit.

Russians seem to be the moodiest players, followed closely by Canadians, who despite their phlegmatic national spirit, always seem to be demanding trades out of Canada or pouting over the league's infamously endemic wifesharing. Scandinavians and Central Europeans do the job, no questions asked. As I've said before, notice the Jets' commitment to avoiding Canadians. You think they underachieved this year, imagine how badly they'd have done with a roster full of bitchy suburbanites who keep saying it's too cold and people like them too much.

What's up with the Jets? From pre-season favs to contend for the Cup to home ice dogs against St Louis in the 1st round.

Blues are -120 for the series, Jets +100.

Laine's pre-season bluster about scoring 50 goals and dethroning Ovechkin from the M Richard trophy throne dribbled out a 30 goal season; which 30 goals sounds not all that bad til you break it down and notice Laine scored 18 of those 30 in November, including 5 in a single game (against the Blues). Since that 18 goal November:

Dec 3
Jan 1
Feb 4
Mar 1
Apr 0

So 1 goal in Laine's last 19 games.

Swedes are very underrated. Look at their national teams. Always near the top. Very important players on winning NHL teams too. They just don’t seem lately to come at the elite top of the draft.

Hellebuyck went from Vezina-shortlist to average and they got down years from pretty much the entire blue line. They're still loaded at forward but they won't make it out of the West unless Byfuglien, Morrissey, and Trouba are healthy and start overachieving. I'm still not sold on the Blues in this matchup; it looks like the kind where the Jets will solve Tarasenko and their depth will win out.

Yeah, Jets depth + size should wear the Blues down over the course of the series. If the Blues steal game 1 up in Winnipeg the Jets might move to +200 territory for the series, making it a worthwhile wager. Same thing for the Pens - Isles series, the other series where the team with home ice advantage/better seed is currently not favored to win the series. Pens -155, Islanders +135 for the series. Doubt the Pens move into positive territory for the series losing the first game on the road, but they should at least move to even money for the series should they lose the first game.

Mitchell going back to Denver for junior year. Still says will sign with hawks but you have to start to wonder.

All those d-men can't play here at once.
Thoughts on Bowen Byram (D) or Dylan Cozens (C) at #3? I'm not really excited about Vasili Podkolzin.

Yeah, tend to feel the same way. Can’t play them all anyways although who knows how Beaudin and Boqvist will develop. I think they will draft Byram.

Byram is alluring, but I'm getting too paranoid about the delayed gratification on defensemen. Even at #3 there's a healthy chance Byram isn't immediately ready for the NHL. You can't go into next October having had three first-round picks in two years with none of them on the roster, at least not when you're a major-market team with aging Hall of Famers.

I wouldn't touch the Russian with a ten-foot pole.

My prayer is that Kakaa Kukuu or whatever the Finn's goofy name is falls to third, and I don't think it's impossible. The Devils already surprised everyone once by taking Hischier first overall when everyone thought Nolan Patrick was the only name on the board. If that happens again, the Rangers with their love of American players will go right for Hughes.

That's my fear with Byram. He might be Bobby Orr lite, but that's not helping if he is a couple years away.

He's still my #3 pick at this point.

Sounds like Kevin Lankinen was great at the Mens world championship.

Is he the goalie of the future?

I keep hearing this Cozens kid is in the mold of Debrincat size and play wise. I keep hearing Byram or Turrette(sp?) the C.

Do the Wild and Avs go and guarantee these college free agents an immediate spot on an NHL line? There is a tremendous amount of movement in the NHL and you aren't stuck with a team for 7 years like baseball so I don't see the draw to staying in school for all of eternity just to sign with your favorite team.

If they want Caulfield they should probably trade down a couple picks. Seems like most analysts are saying it is between Turcotte or Byram at #3. I think any of these players or Boldy and Zegras are all going to be fantastic players.

Kappo blew off the scouting combine, I thought maybe such a "lack of character" could drop him to 3 but then I remembered Lamoriello doesn't run the Devils anymore.

We can still hope he and Hughes do not go 1-2.

With the way Kappo played at the Worlds, there is a better chance Kappo goes #1 than falls to #3.

The Chicago Blackhawks have reportedly acquired defenseman Olli Maatta from the Pittsburgh Penguins for forward Dominik Kahun and a draft pick, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger.

Quote:
Blackhawks acquire Olli Maatta, send Dominik Kahun to Penguins
By Charlie Roumeliotis June 15, 2019 7:29 PM

One of the Blackhawks’ priorities this summer is to add pieces that will help shore up the defensive part of their game after they gave up the second-most goals in the NHL last season. And they didn’t waste much time doing it.

Less than a week before the 2019 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks announced Saturday that they have acquired defenseman Olli Maatta from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for forward Dominik Kahun and a 2019 fifth-round pick.

Maatta is 24 years old, carries a left-handed shot and is two-time Stanley Cup champion. But he battled injuries and fell out of favor in Pittsburgh, where he was a healthy scratch for three games in the first round of the playoffs.

The Blackhawks are hoping a fresh start elsewhere could help Maatta find his game again. He has three years remaining on his deal that carries a $4.083 million cap hit.

Maatta, who was taken in the first round (No. 22 overall) in 2012, had 14 points (one goal, 13 assists) in 60 games last season. His best year came in 2017-18 when he tallied 29 points (seven goals, 22 assists) in 82 games.

The Blackhawks are expected to have some heavy competition among the forwards at training camp with the signings of Dominik Kubalik and Anton Wedin. That likely made Kahun expendable despite compiling 37 points (13 goals, 24 assists) in 82 games in his rookie season.
