Heard Mike refer to this this morning and Murph just went on about what an insult this was to blue collar people.

Is this insulting to blue collar workers?

Teddy Greenstein wrote:
If the Score's best offer is in the $800,000 range—still an absurd amount for the blue-collar crew that makes up most of his audience—would North return or walk away and hope that his purportedly loyal advertisers follow him?

Is it insulting to imply that blue collar workers would think $800k/year is a lot of money? I don't get it.

I think the point was that they're not the market that advertisers are looking for, so the salary seems out-of-whack.

Yeah, I thought it is possible to get that interpretation but that is not the one I had when I first read it. That's why I was wondering if I was just reading it wrong.

I think Teddy meant that it's a lot of money for him to walk away from and his listeners, da blue collar guys, wouldn't understand leaving it. But, I could see how it might mean that it's too much money for a guy like North who only has "blue-collar" listeners.

I really think it's the former and not the latter.

That University of Chicago education really paid off.

Doc, I concur with your interpretation. What is more interesting is that Teddy's support of the point is rather questionable. What it does tell me is that he really dislikes Pappy.

I don't get the fuss over this either. I'm not blue collar and I think $800,000 is an insane amount of money for Mike North, as I would imagine many people would, regardless of the color of their collars.

If it's considered to be demeaning to Mike's audience, I think North himself already went there when he said many of his listeners don't use computers.

Maybe if Teddy is still lurking around here, he could clear up what he meant and give his side.

I'd love to hear his thoughts on the "beating" Mike and Murph are trying to apply. Teddy Who? Murph is the worst at trying to give people grief.

Oh, you know he's lurking. He gets some of his best material from here. Don't be a stranger Teddy.

I have no evidence to back this up, but I have a strange suspicion "Tool of the Week" was fixed today. When people called in to nominate Greenstein, Murph would add a lot of editorial comment and say things like "Aw, Northie, he's great, 17 years, hope you're here for another 17, Mikey . . ." I didn't hear any votes for North, which I thought was odd, considering the events of this morning. Then, finally, the last caller was a vote for Teddy that put him over the top. AND . . . when Murph went to the producer for the vote count about halfway through, it was obvious he wasn't even keeping track. Murph blamed it on "catching him off guard."

When Murph started out at WLS, he had North on weekends. They are tight.

Doc, as resident of Kenilworth, why don't you just ask the "help"? I'm sure they can shed some light on this subject.

The bottom line is it's all about return on investment. Mike's not bringing the ratings that his salary warrants - so WSCR has some tough decisions to make. It's basically a high stakes game of chicken.

If Pappy is great at getting advertisers, maybe he should be their sales manager. He kept that station afloat in the early days, but the problem is CBS wasn't the owner back then, so they probably don't give a rat's ass.

Pappy's led a charmed life since starting at the Score, and I believe he earned every dime he made for the first decade - he put that station on the map.

I think sportsradio in general has jumped the shark - but that's a story for another day.

Teelander, you are sorely mistaken. Coppock moved around town for 20 years with Coke and Chevy.

Mike is tight with his advertisers and they may remain loyal for a lot longer than you calculate.

So you think they would stop advertising on the score if Mike left? I doubt that. The score reaches their target audience. Heck, the rates might be cheaper for them without the kickbacks to Mike. North doesn't have as much control as you imply.
North's audience is shrinking at a rapid rate, how many listeners can he deliver to another station when he can't deliver them at the score?

I didn't say that these folks would stop their ads on the Score. I also did not imply that Mike had any power over them. I did state that there exists an obvious loyalty between them.

As for Mike's audience shrinking, how much audience share has he lost since taking over for Murph?

It's insulting to imply that "blue collar" workers actually wear blue collars.
