A published report suggesting Mike North's days at WSCR 670-AM could be numbered led the Score's morning host to blast his bosses and take steps toward the door Friday.

"It was a good piece for me," North said, saying the publicity is bringing in offers. "I've gotten two more calls."

North's contract, reportedly worth $1.5 million a year, expires July 1, and for months speculation has been that CBS Radio, owner of the Score, is low-balling him with an offer for about half that.

North said negotiations were "very sporadic" on the corporate side, but acknowledged there is an offer on the table.

"I really have no problem with the offer," he said. "I'm just getting better offers."

Score Program Director Mitch Rosen has said it's station policy not to discuss negotiations and that he wants North back and believes North wants to stay.

"If they respect me and they pay me what they're paying me now, it's a no-brainer," North admitted.

Yet those are big ifs, and while he said his relations are good with Rosen and CBS Radio's local head Rod Zimmerman, he did not say the same about Score Vice President and General Manager Paul Agase.

"I believe there are people brighter when they're sleeping than he is," North said.

That's nothing new. North has taken issue with Agase on the air for years over station promotion - or lack thereof.

"They've never really helped my show," he said. Adding that he's frequently criticized for being a "self-promoter," he said, "You have to if you're not promoted."

High-tension negotiations are typical in radio and at the Score. North squeezed the station for more money when he was moved to mornings, and the Score also had contentious negotiations with baseball analyst Steve Stone before re-signing him earlier this year. The saber-rattling seemed situation normal, with North likely to return in any case. He's been the voice of the station since its inception. Yet, that may have changed now.

"They miscalculated by telling me to go out and get other deals," North said. "It's not about the money with me. It's more about the respect factor. If you disrespect me, I don't care how much money you got, because I'll work for less for somebody else."

Ratings reportedly are down for North's show, which has been running behind ESPN Radio's syndicated Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic on WMVP 1000-AM. North pointed out it's not ratings that matter but revenue, and he has always produced on that with close ties to his sponsors - whom he figures to take with him wherever he goes.

"It's a moneymaking machine," he said of the Score, "and I'm proud to say part of that machine has been built with my efforts."

North acknowledged the radio landscape has changed, with Mancow Muller and "Crazy" Howard McGee being hustled out of local gigs and into syndication in recent years. "The big-money guys have been forced out," he said. "Well, I'm not gonna be one of them."

Ok, lets break down Pappy here.

I doubt it, cant prove it, but this is spin control.

But Pappy, you wanted total control of the show, thought you didnt need help.

But.....didnt you just say twice it was about the money?

I dont think I have to type anything, but I do know now for sure Pappy is full of crap, because its about the money and he wants big money for a shitty product, only in America.

Does North think the Score is buying this? Pappy has no other offers.

What? After the Teddy article 2 other stations offered him money? That's insane. Why would the article make them offer him money. They knew he was a free agent. No other station can offer him as much as the Score.

North is trying to get the Score to up the offer. That's all he's doing. There is no competition for him. The Score should pull that offer off the table. North will take it in the end. I can't believe they still want him.

What an idiot.

Beardown, this ploy is something a teenager would think up. I just love how he says it isnt about the money, but then the whole article is about how he wants money...lol. I did have some respect for Mike, but now, nothing, this is simply pathetic.

Far more people read TG's piece than have ever listened to North's show. He comes across like he is -an ignorant, loud mouth with a huge ego. His numbers are just plain awful for a morning drive show, let alone the only morning local sports show. He's a has-been and the glory days are over for him. Unless he has learned to speak Spanish, he has no future as a drive time host in Chicago.

Bebe and Mike must have been frantically making calls to get some PR they could control. Good to see old Ted fell for it.

Agreed. Even if another station (or two) were interested, are they really sitting back, and waiting for a Teddy Greenstein article ripping North so that they can make an offer ?

I don't believe North has many options, if any, and, if they do exist, they are probably for huge pay cut in lesser time slots.

If I were the Score, I'd call his bluff. If they want him back, but are ready to move on should he decide to leave, why not play hard ball with him ? I'd start reducing my offers to him, and let him know that they are only going to be reduced from there, and if he does have a better offer elsewhere, he should take it. From the Score's perspective, they can probably have a new show probably with better local sports conversation for about 20% of what this show costs.

Its funny how this worked out. Mike cries for 3 hours on his show about TG article and then "poof" Ted Cox prints this on the onlinde edition of the daily herald at 3:00pm. I have to ask, what was in it for Ted? A life time supply of Marconi? Ted looks bad in this, because he knows pappys ratings have been bad and to let mike ramble on like he did in that article, it just looks like a favor.

Ted Cox lost a lot of creditbility on this one, it looks like Pappy found himself a media critic bitch.

Good point, I hadn't noticed the logistics. Pappy seems a lot like Clemens to me right now..deny, deny, deny. He's going down hard here. Hopefully he won't be back at all, but I'd be OK with a drastically reduced salary and a huge ego check

To me it's like in baseball when they sign some veteran pitcher who's a career .500 pitcher with a 4.50 ERA- I just wonder why not let some of the young talent get a chance for far cheaper. You're telling me putting on Last Call or whoever it is in mornings for (as has been mentioned) like 10% of the cost wouldn't be better than having Pappy? If the new show fails, move on, couldn't be any worse...
