Serious question, Rick. Did you hate the Night King the same way you hated Joffrey or Ramsay? Hell, I wasn't 100% sure I shouldn't be rooting for the Night King.

I agree. Major letdowns the entire episode. This is the War of the North, the Wall falls, Jon is the Prince that was Promised and was the Lord Commander of the NightsWatch. He kills the Night King, that is why he was resurrected by Melisandre. This was cop out writing. Everyone had dragonglass weapons, how were the wights getting reanimated again? And why not just dig a ditch and fill it with dragonglass and light it on fire - problem solved. The dragon scenes were impossible to follow and the part in the crypts where Sansa and Tyrion were hiding was also cop out writing. Tyrion is begging to go fight and all of a sudden he is hiding when he has a dragonglass dagger and knows that works to kill the wights? Nope. Very disappointing.

Melisandre was wrong again. You understand she has been wrong SEVERAL times about the identity of Azor Ahai? She figured it out in the end.

Spoiler:

Arya is pregnant from Gendry and is carrying the Prince that was Promised. Melisandre's magic on Gendry gave him super sperm.

I’ve never seen an episode of the show but decided to watch last night because of all the hype surrounding it. I know about some of the characters and plot lines just through pop culture osmosis but that’s about it. I have to say I was entertained throughout. I’m thinking the darkness of the battle didn’t really bother me because I didn’t really know who’s who anyway. Some of the visuals were really great for a TV show. Someone used the term “spectacle” and that is what my virgin eyes saw. I really enjoyed watching it.

Let’s all focus on the one event we’ve been waiting for after the battle at Winterfell.

Clegane bowl is happening.

Last night was definitely hit or miss...I still enjoyed the hell out of it. The dragon skyfighting was confusing. I struggle suspending my disbelief of how they stay on the damn beasts. How To Train Your Dragon did a much better job. The only sign of military strategy was the guarding of the retreat and the little collapsing bridge...which was pretty stupid. The Dothraki charging to their doom was pretty idiotic.

I also was disappointed with Bran...again. What was the point of sending out the crows?

Arya's fighting sequences were spectacular...although her appearing completely out of left field was stupid.

I still don't understand why the battle against the Night King didn't end the series. Leave everyone dead at the end, followed by a final teaser Easter egg of hope.

i think the bigger picture of his resurrection was giving weight to the backstory of his birth and the importance of his legacy. but it would have been more satisfying for him to kill the night king, especially since he has so much more history than arya did.

i still get flare-ups of feeling like RR really dropped the ball not finishing this story himself because benioff & weiss show their weaknesses as writers an awful lot in these post-ASOIAF storylines.

Jon Snow killing the Night King would have been the biggest "fan service" in the whole show.

GRRM told them that Arya kills the Night King. He is still guiding the story.

Where did you read/hear that GRRM told them Arya kills the Night King? Arya is an assassin to kill Lannisters and everyone who wronged her family, not the undead. That is Jon Snow's purpose. Why have a entire series dedicated to the Song of Ice and Fire (Stark and Targaryen) and not have that character be the one to save the world from Winter and the Everlasting Night? It doesn't make sense.

Nah. Jon Snow is the coalition leader but Arya is pretty much an executioner so it made a lot of sense to me that she would be the one to off the Night King. What made sense to me was that her ability to basically sneak up on people would allow her to get close enough to the NK to kill him. And when the Red Witch gave her a sort of pep talk, I think she knew what she had to do.

Look, pretty much everyone in this story thought that they were going to be killed except the Imp the perpetual optimist. Even Arya was pretty much down with her fate, right? So, I think that Red Witch gave her a sort of message that it was up to her to save the world.

I think that this episode made all of the sense in the world because the real climax is the fight with Cercei and company. the Night King really was like a kind of bogeyman in a story. He never talked. No one really knew anything about him and really didn't care. They just knew that they had to keep him and his zombies away from them and learn how to kill him.

And now the real ending is going to take place and the main characters are still in place including Jon Snow, Dany, and Cersei Lannister. I still think that at the end, it will be Jon and Dany and their dragons flying away somewhere and Sansa and the Imp ruling the 7 Kingdoms. I can't quite figure out who kills Cersei but how about this one? How about that Arya and the Hound kill the Mountain and the Hound puts on the Mountains armor and offs Cersei?

Too bad one of us wasn't there. Jon Snow is one of the worst generals in history.

As a strategist, yes. As a great leader, no. His men fight for him and he never gives up and they don't either. Think about it. Every person in this entire story was ready to give up at some point in this story or did an dishonorable thing sometime in their life. Not Jon Snow.

What I'm hearing is that Jon Snow is the GoT version of Joe Maddon.

I don't think we were supposed to hate the NK. He didn't do anything to make us hate him like the others did. No one got screwed for him. He was a relentless general with a singular goal in mind. I was glad he failed but I didn't ever hate him.

What is the actual plan at the Battle of Winterfell? We never hear Jon or Dany shout any orders. Other than a quick signal flare, Davos just hangs out on the top of a wall. Grey Worm seems to be improvising. Everyone else just stands in their flank before quickly retreating. The entire battle for the seven kingdoms seems to be built on the idea of “Well, we’ll gather here and hope for the best.” In a series that has so often luxuriated on the details of military warfare, that delights in smart minds playing the battlefield to their specific advantages, this is not good enough.

I genuinely feel bad for those who didn't love that episode. Might as well stop watching if you aren't enjoying the conclusion because it was filmed too dark.

You can enjoy a show while also being disappointed in aspects where you feel the writers dropped the ball. If the earlier seasons were this sloppy I don't think people would care so much.

Right.

I liked the episode for what it was, which was a great spectacle. But there were issues with the plot and story they tried to tell.

Why was it even necessary for the Night King to confront Bran? Why not launch a dragon air raid on the area where Bran is camped instead? Or simply let his undead hordes slaughter everyone in Winterfell while he remains on the sidelines?

And why did dragon glass work on the Night King but dragon fire did not?

The speculation in this article is good.

https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/game-of-thrones/game-of-thrones-theory-bran-stark-night-king-season-8-winterfell-battle-episode-3-a8891446.html

Really tho, what was Bran doing while he was warging for so long?
