Maybe the Night King backstory and stuff will be saved for the prequel series.

He was obviously controlling the Night King.

So when Bran becomes the new Night King in 2 episodes, it will in fact be Jon Snow that has to kill him. Making this episode make more sense.

Are you being silly?

Because I may like that.

Yes.

I would like that too.

The survivors celebrate and march to King's Landing next episode. The following episode is the battle at King's Landing. Team Targaryen wins with some casualties (Tyrion/Jamie). They start to celebrate and the Bran becomes the Night King and raises his arms. The vanquished rise and the dead Lannisters have to fight the Targaryens again.

Are you Goldenjetting me? Is this a spoiler?

No it's pure fiction from my brain.

Although I do approve of this direction...there's GOT to be more to the Bran storyline...or what's the point of his getting dragged all over the place for the past 7 years.

It is kinda pointing to that. Still thinking he is related to Jon and Danny. He survived that dragon fire.

Is it the same group that is going to work on the prequel series? Or are they still moving forward with Confederate?

I guess it should not be a surprise that it seems disorganized at the end considering the book series did as well, and GRRM did not even bother to finish it. It seems like the complaints about the image muddiness were fairly universal:

https://www.theverge.com/2019/4/29/1852 ... s-darkness

I don't expect there to be an addressing of the plot holes in this episode. I imagine we are going to a True Detective like ending. Yeah we screwed up getting here, but it was one great ride and the promise of more was fun speculation.

this is what i'm guessing will be the case.

i don't buy into the "there's more to what's going on with bran". it's something that would have to be more than just a bunch of undersexed reddit users' "fan theories" to get my interest. i kind of agree with the notion of bran's story is just flat-out weak.

i never bought into the "bran is the night king" mainly because it would be impossible. the night king snuffed out the old 3-eyed raven. he was going to snuff out the new one.

one thing that is funny about where the wights wound up...why did they have to become an army, to fight a traditional infantry-style war? they were so much creepier when they were just lurking around, and when they were recklessly being raised by the night king, like in "hardhome".

The White Walkers never even got to do anything in the whole series with the exception of the one that Jon killed at Hardhome.

What more about the night king could there be?

Didnt the show reveal who he was and what his motivation was? (I guess they could do no he's really a new night king and its _____ )

I never really had interest on anything north of winterfell

I agree Lyana Mormount should have gotten crushed in a GRRM story. But her going out as a bad ass didn't bother me either. Just a little David and Goliath thing.

The episode was entertaining but not as good as I had hoped. The choice (and it was a choice, you can absolutely film night snowy battles clearly to the viewer) to have the viewers vision be affected too was a bad one.

I mean the whole episode being one battle sounds cool but its not. I'd much have preferred so.w good dialogue with Tyrion and Sansa and 10 minutes less of battle. Blackwater was better

It was the worst of the big battle episodes. I get the chaos and fog of war, but it was very difficult to follow. The battle also had no ebb or flow. Zombies were everywhere, but the main characters were somehow never in any real danger. Then Arya jumped and did her knife drop move.

Upon 2nd viewing, I enjoyed the episode much more. Idk if it was because it's still light out but the episode was easier to see and follow

The Night King and wights was a nice side story. I'm happy to get back to palace intrigue. Sansa vs Dany should be great stuff

I’m 15min into my 2nd viewing, and I can’t see shit compared to last night. Wtf?

I just turned my brightness up, so it’s all good now. CGI not as crisp, but it’s ok.

I would actually be happy with that. I've always enjoyed the other characters and how they react to the Night King but I haven't ever considered him anything more than a metaphor of impending doom/death. I never thought he had any real reason or motive to do anything besides the low level thinking of "kill everyone". The only real interesting thing he ever seemingly did was to have that weird deal where he was taking newborn boys from the guy on the other side of the wall. Even when he got the ice dragon, I imagine his internal dialogue was something like "Dragon died. Get chains. Pull out dragon. Make it an ice dragon. Now I have an ice dragon. Shoot wall with ice".

I will say the point about him being immune to fire is interesting, but I also have to question why Jon Snow was scared of fire at all if that is a family thing.

Its not. Other Targaryens can be burnt. Dany is special.

Also in the show it may be because he's only half Targaryen?

I was underwhelmed by the episode and I anticipated that I would be. I am not a huge battle scene fan and I knew it would be in pitch dark and difficult to follow so I was prepared. I watched the show on my best TV in a room in complete darkness and it was still hard to follow.

I think Ep.2 has been the best of the season so far.

Side note - Barry was an insane episode.

The reason that article failed was because Cersei was smart to avoid the battle no matter how it ended. She was at best getting imprisoned for the rest of her life if she lost the iron throne.

I thought it was his take on the overblown hype of the Night King and his army. A half dozen houses and several thousand soldiers have waged a perpetual war for 8 years. The Night King and his army of millions? are dispatched in a single night.

Though the writer may be calling his shot a bit early.

Cersei is an amoral sociopath; she has no interest in anything that benefits the world.

Agreed. This was mainly about calling out the incoherence of the larger Night King/Army of the Dead subplot. It definitely did not produce a return on the substantial investment the writers gave it over the past eight years.

I don't know, but I'll be pissed if I watched 8 seasons of this shit with over a third of it dedicated to a stupid zombie apocalypse with no more payoff than what we've gotten so far.

That's what happens when you build a nearly unstoppable force with only one weakness. The way it was written was that the Night King either wins outright or the whole army gets destroyed instantaneously. Killing anyone but the Night King was useless, and was since episode 1.

I guess an alternate version could have been they don't lose the dragon, they then use all 3 to wipe out the whole army of the undead besides the unburnable Night King, and then Jon Snow walks up to him and stabs him but people would be like "They built this whole army up, and then it was just 3 dragons that killed them in a few minutes".

This really is the problem with the books being unfinished. It's much harder to end a story than it is to start or continue one. The Night King had to die or kill everyone. You have to come up with a way to do one of them. The show ends if he kills everyone with about 20 storylines ending with it before their conclusion. If he gets beaten, it was a waste of all of his scenes because all it took was him getting stabbed.

What do you mean payoff? The Night King has always been a way to advance the story of the living. From the stories of the Night's Watch, which existed because of them, to the alliance of John and Dany, to the redemption arc or Jamie reaching it's conclusion.

Before you said you didn't want to watch a zombie movie for 8 seasons, but you also seem to wish the zombies were more integral to the story.

Exactly. The NK was the most hyped character outside of maybe Arya. And I mean the hype created by the show itself, not by the internet.

He was the most dangerous, and that battle proved it. He killed the entire Dothraki army in about a minute. He stood there and got roasted by a dragon without a scratch. He basically marched directly to his target. He fought two dragons. He then raised every dead person to finish the job.

He lost, on a fluke. Did you really want the Night King to kill everyone and then march on King's Landing and finish the job?

The Night King was never going to beat everyone and win.

I'd prefer if there were no white walkers in the story at all. I've never been all that interested in the Night's Watch. But since that was part of the show, it can't simply be that this Night King who has a special origin that is clearly somehow connected to three-eyed ravens and old gods and weirwood trees, and who has repeatedly killed and laid out a specific pattern in doing so, is just going to be destroyed by Arya after which we just move on to Cersei and King's Landing without ever thinking of him again. Think for just a minute how fucking dumb that would be.

So basically, Game of Thrones is an allegory for global climate change with Cersei playing the role of Donald Trump.

I think wanting to know more about the Night King's origin is fair though there was at least somewhat of an explanation. I don't see the issue with how he was killed. Someone had to do it. It could have been Jon but Arya is a great character too(who was boring when she across the sea).

As someone else pointed out, even in the books, the story was always about the Starks vs. the Lannisters. Obviously, it's also about the Targaryens now that Dany and Jon are linked to them.
