All that character development for what?

I think everyone is coming around to the opinion that this show is shit without George RR Martin's guiding hand?

Absolutely none of us have any idea how much input Martin still has besides telling the writers how the books end.

Whatever ending George told them, they aren't using.

They are. He told them the major points of the ending of it. They did have a lot to fill in but it's going to end the same was as the books.

I love how you have such confidence in this

There are major characters/plots from the books that were dropped to accommodate for TV. The ones they did keep have deviated as well. Unfortunately we may never know if George doesn't finish the damn books!

GRRM said he told them the major points of the ending.

I didn't say it would be the exact same but they reach the same ultimate conclusions. As we talked about a few weeks ago, the Night King doesn't even exist in the books yet if at all. I am sure the show will have the ending that GRRM told them for the characters that were always in the books though.

After reading some reviews it does crack me up how the show went 180 for SJWs. The "good" queen became a crazy bitch, the army of brown people started killing innocent people and the white male is gonna save the world.

I have loved this season so far and the last episode was no different. However, it does have flaws but I have to see what happens next week to make a complete determination on those.

However, they made a huge mistake trying to put 3 seasons worth of stuff in 6 episodes. They should have really ramped it up last season to give this time more time to breathe or as now has been reported accepted that it would be a 10 episode season rather than 6. This is obvious from the "Mad Queen" storyline which literally took place over a few episodes with only minor hints prior to that. It's completely understandable why she went mad when you really think about it but it all happened in one or two episodes. She's spent the whole series basically getting whatever she wants because she has 3 dragons and has viewed herself as some sort of great person for it even though she has always had the goal of taking over the world and doing it by force because she has weapons that no one else has. She had never even seen the world she wanted to control and when she got there she learned it wouldn't be the easy conquest by a grateful people who would be happy that she took them out of chains which don't really exist there anyways because in general the people on that side of the water do live pretty free lives even with the Lannisters running things. Add in the issues with Jon and how he is rightfully more respected than she is and it is a perfect storm for her to throw a tantrum and take over by fear. That's why she burned everything. If that had happened over a season I think it would have been a better way to do it rather than defeating the Night King, talking to Cersei, killing everyone in what feels like 3 days.

I think after a cooldown period a lot of people will come around to it simply being a season that was done on light speed but upon rewatch there is more appreciation for the story still being great.

Excellent assessment. Good job.

we lost cable/internet last night right around the time the show was starting (and i think it was directly responsible), so we didn't get to watch the episode until this morning.

i agree with the sentiment that dany descending into "the mad queen" is fine; i ultimately think martin has the same thing planned for his book ending. jon vs. dany (ice vs. fire). something like that. if not jon, then arya or another stark. but in any event, i believe the reign of kings and queens comes to an end for the story and that seems to be inevitable.

however, they rushed it and cheapened it. of course we can understand daenerys's state of mind after losing 2 dragons, a couple dear friends, and cersei's smug arrogance staring her in the face. but we never *see* her feel this. we just see her expression of rage suddenly turn her into a barbarian. nothing in her past would lead her to this sudden change. yeah she's a targaryen. but she had plenty of reasons to go rogue back in mereen and other slave cities and she chose wisdom over bloodshed.

she throws that out the window, simply, because benioff & weiss had nothing creative left. they have to end this show quickly and they just put everything on fast forward.

there's really no way the finale can be all that satisfying because these past 2 seasons have been decaying the emotional attachments we've had with these characters. and the deaths in episode 5 were really unspectacular, and empty. too much build up just to throw them away.

too many bad writers getting too many good gigs these days.

Yeah, last night's episode seemed like a reactionary social fantasy about shifting U.S. demographics. Don't count on the ability/desire of "the other" to integrate themselves into the social order. They are not liberators, they are destroyers. Kill them before they kill you.

I was hoping to avoid it but now I have to read those last two damn books.

That was an awesome looking episode and it was awful.

The Wire's 5th season was way better than Season 7 and 8 of GOT though. Big difference there.

I agree with that. Obviously more time is passing on the show than it seems. The travel times alone suggest as much. But the emotional impact is different when everything is jammed together. It took Dany six seasons to get to Westeros. You identified with her struggle. Her slide into madness was gradual but the pacing of the Season 8 episodes made it seem sudden. The easy fix would have been to drop the pointless Night King story altogether.

The only thing I kind of like is how you can look back at her "struggle" and see the signs of what would become of her character. The show was always written in a way where the person you are following becomes sympathetic in all but the extreme cases. That's how people like Jamie and Tyrion and Theon and The Hound went from villians to sympathetic figures and in some ways heroes while people like Cersei, The Mountain, Euron(who was a terrible character anyways) and Tywin pretty much stayed villians throughout. Dany did a lot of messed up things before she arrived with the other characters but it was almost portrayed as her her doing the right thing to break the chains and free everyone even though her ultimate goal was always the same as Cersei with nearly as much willingness to go to extremes. I think it wasn't fully realized until she burned the Tarleys for not kneeling to her. We really only knew the Tarley family through Sam and we didn't even like the father but it just seemed like something that a tyrant would do rather than someone who wants to free the world from tyrants. However, we cheered when she did the same thing against the masters in previous seasons.

I don't think killing the Tarleys was extreme. Stannis executed Mance for refusing to kneel. She had other extreme moments here and there but nothing that suggested the mass murder she carried out yesterday. The writing sucks.

Stannis also murdered his own child and his brother Renly with the help of Melisandre. He wasn't a great guy either.

You just don't get it.

She just wanted to be loved. That didn't happen instantly so now she will use fear.

It's a metaphor.

I did enjoy seeing someone post about how the show is an allegory for how white women will turn on women of color eventually.

I suppose that episode really does ruin the series for the people that were trying to use it to promote a social agenda.

I for one was happy to see how easily the NK was defeated since he's climate change and all.

Yup, my wife was crowing over last season and this one how Dany, Cersei, Sansa and Arya were all "bosses" in a sense and running everything.

last night i cracked that's why you can't let women run the show. too hormonal and moody

Did you know Varys was trying to poison Dany? That's why he was asking the little girl to keep trying to get Dany to eat!

I was disappointed in his death.

I wish it had more build up and suspense like Littlefinger's.
