You would need zero stipulations if the guy was a true ace. The fact that you have to say, "Yeah but...," regarding getting the best out of Carlos Rodon for a few starts here and there means you agree with me.

Putting the label of "Ace" aside, I think Rodon still can be a solid starting pitcher. He has a good delivery and movement on his pitches. It is the movement on his pitches that may be part of his problem because he can't get them over sometimes and that results in way too many deep counts with hitters who know this weakness.

Sometimes, a pitcher needs to modify his grip a bit to take some of the spin off of a pitch to get it over the plate. Also, he needs to get ahead of a hitter and once he is ahead, GO AFTER the hitter and not arbitrarily waste pitches. Too many times, pitchers start nibbling away after being early in the count and end up walking the guy or having to give in to the hitter with a cookie late in the count. As a coach, this drives me nuts.

Like I said, I won't argue semantics of the word ace. Give me a 19 year old Rodon free of future injury, and I'd give you a cy young candidate today.

That goes back to him needing to pitch every 5 days consistently. He has always straightened out his command with 400 in game pitches under his belt. This is what Coop has said and this is what's evident. Listen, he has a just about the top slider in the game. Did that eventually get him hurt. Probably. So obviously we have a conundrum. And look how long it took him to get a changeup that he could throw a strike with.

Nah, I'd say he's effectively done

Having him inexplicably skip AA was one of the dumbest decisions ever.

I don't know about hindsight. He was solid and robust and his delivery and motion were pure as the driven snow.

Every pitching prospect should have some time at AA. It's an important level for learning. Nobody except the White Sox has their pitching prospects skip AA.

So I take it you don't want to see Cease this year?

You have to get Cease close to 100 innings, healthy in the minors 1st. It shouldn't be even considered.

I still think Cease should have started this year in AA then bumped up to AAA. There is just too much weird shit going on in AAA. For instance the Cubs have Happ @ Iowa sacrificing all his power for contact. A bunch of experiments. AA is pure talent vs talent.

He had over 120 last year(50 in AA) and that's about the limit for minors with the short schedule and 7 innings. Go the full 120 again and see where he's at. If it's a full blown success, put him in the rotation next year and give him 160.

I do subscribe to the theory that service time should not be considered at all for pitchers. There are finite amount of bullets in a arm. Use the best ones in the majors as soon as you can.

Nate Jones to the IL. Might as well put him out to pasture.
Yup.

Quote:
CHICAGO – When it was mentioned as a possibility about a week-and-a-half ago, many White Sox fans feared that one of the main pitchers in their rotation was headed towards major surgery.

On Monday, Rick Hahn confirmed those fears about "ace" starter Carlos Rodon.

The White Sox general manager announced that the starting pitcher will undergo Tommy John surgery and will miss the remainder of the 2019 season. Hahn had mentioned this could be a possibility when Rodon was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 2nd.

Rodon will undergo the procedure this week and the hope is that he could return to the White Sox for the second half of the 2020 season.

Hahn also announced that relief pitcher Nate Jones will undergo a forearm procedure that will cost him the rest of the 2019 season.

Better news from the general manager came regarding Eloy Jimenez, who is headed to Triple-A Charlotte to begin rehab on an ankle injury suffered on April 26th. Hahn told reporters that there is hope that the outfielder could return for the team’s next road trip starting on May 20th in Houston.

I read that. Do we know if it is the same elbow he had TJ on?

White Sox should just go Cubs route on the rebuild . Just go after established FA pitching and draft hitters .

Decent chance they sign Keuchel in a month after the draft, maybe 3-62$

Sure. Just give you a healthy, 19 years old, injury free, 4-5 starts head of steam Rodon, and there's no semantics at all.
