no such thing as summer blend or winter blend. more people drive/are going places in warmer weather months. more gas being consumed = more profit opportunity

Exactly. And also look for prices to rise before Memorial Day and the 4th of July. Pretty much the same thing every year.

Along with the annual ill timed problem with a refinery in Whiting.

worked in the business for nearly a decade. the refineries aren't spending time churning out special blends of gas for 1/2 a year in certain parts of the country. heres another bit of info...BP with their "invigorate" and Shell with the "V Power" is all bullshit too. Shell, BP, Amoco, Thorntons, Speedway all buy their gas from the same place and its all the same. Shell and BP just advertise differently to justify being 2-3 cents higher. Thorntons and Speedway make up the difference of lower gas prices in their convenience stores...which is where the actual profits are made. That's why BP is buying thorntons and keeping all their stores up and running without a name change. They barely profit on gas sold alone.

This is true, but a little misleading. Those bs detergents additives, etc do exist, they are in the gas. But the proprietary Shell one, the BP etc are ALL added in at the refinery. It would be inefficient for the refineries to have separate gas for Shell, BP, etc.. That is how they cover their bases. There is another grade they produce without all that stuff too. But don't worry if you are torn between Shell Invigorate and BP Accelerate of whatever to make your car run better. Odds are very good they are both in there anyway.

That was sort of my understanding as well. Truck BP stops at some Shell place to receive additives and truck BP does the same at another BP load. Then both trucks slip out past Lemont somewhere and fill the tanker with the same Citgo gas or whatever,

Say good bye to Hammond and Hegewisch as well, so why not as long as they bomb on a day when the wind is blowing strong to the south. :D

Hammond can go, Hegewisch gotta stay. Where would I get my sausage if Steve's lounge fell? It's close to the last of my old time taverns left on the city where you can smoke a cigarette and bang a hot Pollock at Steve's or uncle Bobby's.

About the opposite in diesel world. I save a decent amount when I switch from winter diesel (#1 diesel. Blended with 2) to straight. And the difference between those two fuels is the difference between things working and not when temps fall below 10.

Yup. Most stations make $1 profit for every 10-12 gallons of gas sold.

2-3% depending on state I guess. Not worth the fucking time for me to get out of bed. The mini mart or out here they are about mini supermarkets with made to order food. Now that is a margin.

Think about the process a gallon of gas goes through. Think about the process a gallon of bottled water goes through. Now tell me which one is a total ripoff.

You also have to pay for the fuel when the tankers arrive, that's alot of dough to shell out to make chump change. The real money comes from the items inside the store.

we used to have older customers accuse us of price gouging when we would lower or raise prices any time a truck happened to be at the station. I guess back in the day, the loads would be paid for then and there, thus raising the price to make it back quicker. these oldies didn't know that that shit had been paid for or that automatic billing and a corporate structure exists. they also thought a 21 year old customer service rep controlled the price of gas and was making millions.

You would think if gas stations made so little money they would go out of business much more often.
