WICKER PARK — In a fast turnover, the former Wicker Park Tavern sports bar at the corner of North and Damen avenues will become a bank — and a cafe.

On Monday, Capital One Cafe spokeswoman Courtney Rhodes confirmed that the storefront at 1958 W. North Ave. is currently being converted from a bar into the city's third bank/cafe hybrid.

Set to open this winter, the multi-level 13,000 square-foot Capital One Cafe will "serve as a community space where Wicker Park residents can recharge their bank accounts, devices and lives while learning new ways to manage their finances through free Capital One services like money coaching or money workshops," Rhodes said.

The cafe will also offer fee-free ATMs for Capital One customers, free Wi-Fi for everyone, coffee from Peet's Coffee and local pastries. Those with Capital One cards will get 50 percent off beverages at the cafe, which will be stocked with drinks and pastries from Peet's Coffee.

Another Capital One Cafe at 3435 N. Southport Ave. in Lakeview is 7,500-square-foot, with a sidewalk cafe and seats for 100. The site also hosts workshops on topics like investing, group events and offers meeting space for community and non-profit groups.

Tavern closed on October 15, ending the prominent corner storefront's century-long run as a bar. The sports bar — which went by the name Tavern — opened in 2005. Before that, it was Borderline.

The building, which also includes the recently shuttered Cafe Absinthe at 1954 W. North and the Annex upstairs dance club, which closed earlier this month, has been owned by the Menetti family since 1979.

Teddy Menetti, the building's owner and Capital One Cafe's landlord, was not immediately available to comment on the forthcoming bank/cafe.

There are lots of other banking options near the new Capital One Cafe, albeit none with a cafe (unless the free coffee carafe, plate of cookies and two comfy chairs at the nearby 1849 W. North Ave. Chase bank branch counts).

Directly across from the forthcoming Capital One Cafe there is a Bank of America at 1585 N. Milwaukee Ave., which commands the corner of Milwaukee and North avenues, and the nearby Byline Bank at 1555 N. Damen Ave.

The Virginia-based Capital One first announced plans for Chicago cafes in July 2016. It opened a cafe in January in Lincoln Park's New City complex at 1538 N. Clybourn Ave.

The bank aims to make financial planning "as easy as a cup of coffee, the way you start your day," Capital One business director Justin Evans previously said.

Banking "ambassadors" will be on hand to help cafe customers learn about financial options, whether they're with Capital One or not.

Hours are not yet available, but if the new Wicker Park Capital One Cafe is anything like the other two, the banking cafe itself will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, with condensed hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays.

I just cannot understand where this demand comes from. Chicago is a nice city and I love it, but that's because its home. There's a lot of really aggravating bullshit about living here that's convinced me to move once already, and if it wasn't for my personal connection to the people here I wouldn't have come back.

People from Iowa, Michigan, Ohio etc. that are flooding into these neighborhoods (judging by the license plates) dont have that. So why come here? Why not NYC where people are less xenophobic and tribal, or LA for better weather... paying $1000/month for these neighborhoods is fucking insane.

Shared electric scooters, which have been a source of both fun and controversy in other cities, are coming to Chicago next month.

The city on Wednesday released details of a pilot program allowing electric scooter sharing in a large section of the Northwest, Southwest and West sides, including such diverse neighborhoods as Austin, Avondale, Pilsen and South Lawndale, but leaving out the Loop and communities along the lakefront.

The program has been expected in the wake of a report in March from Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s mobility task force, which recommended a pilot within a defined area rather than all over the city. The scooter program will be similar to bike sharing, in that users will pay for a trip, then leave the scooter for another user.

“Scooters can potentially provide an affordable, environmentally friendly transportation solution for thousands of Chicagoans,” Sharon Feigon, executive director of the Shared Use Mobility Center, a nonprofit that advocates for shared ways to get around, said in a statement. “We are very excited to test the impact of this new mobility option in Chicago.”

Chicago is using the pilot to test how scooters can help reduce car use, get commuters to and from transit and increase access to transportation, Chicago Department of Transportation Commissioner Rebekah Scheinfeld said.

Scooters have been a source of contention in other cities because of concerns that they litter sidewalks and pose a safety hazard to both riders and pedestrians. Chicago’s program includes rules that try to address those potential problems.

The program, which will run from June 15 through Oct. 15, limits speeds to 15 mph and restricts where the scooters can be parked. It will include a minimum of 2,500 and a maximum of 3,500 scooters in the pilot area, divided evenly among selected vendors. Vendors have not yet been chosen — the biggest nationally are Bird and Lime, both based in California.

I don't see how scooters are any worse than bikes.
