Hiring cold callers is something I know a lot about. The first thing I learned was I couldn't try to hire myself. Everyone has a natural tendency to try to hire him or herself. A good cold caller is a special thing. It takes a certain kind of person to constantly be told "no" and maintain confidence. It's a super high turnover job. If you get someone who sticks it's well worth doing what is necessary to keep them.

Has to be one of the toughest jobs out there on a psychological level.

I don't even understand how that job still exists. Do you ever get anything from talking to someone on the phone anymore? I mean, you might get my Mom, but she can barely hear anyway.

I think this is why JORR has moved into loan sharking as a primary source of income.

It was an elective at Gordon.

It was a requirement at Holy Cross.

It's exchanges like this that making coming to CFMB worthwhile.

Before my partner and I went into business together he worked for me at a construction company I owned with some other guys. He was in his early 20s at the time and he ran our "boiler room", managing all the callers and making calls himself. He and I worked closely together and shared an office.

The first time my wife ever met Joe she had come out to the office to help me with some computer stuff on a Saturday. Joe was in there setting and confirming appointments and directing the sales guys who were out on their Saturday sits. (Each salesman was supposed to handle two sits on a Saturday, but we never gave them both appointments at once. That's another whole story.) Anyway, my wife is working on the computer and after awhile she takes me aside and says, "Where did you find that kid with that voice? I'm ready to buy a room addition myself right now just from listening to him."

The people who are really good at it can be very convincing but now it seems to be almost always a computer that plays a recording.

At my place, there was always a loose association with the person that you were calling. It wasn't just a random number being called. It was a list of customers of Business X being offered either another service by Business X or a service of the partner of Business X.

That's how we did it too. Otherwise there's an issue with the "No Call" list and the fines are heavy. That's why the scumbags who randomly call use all kinds of tricks of telephony and route the calls in a way where they are impossible to trace.

I recently got a call with a computer generated voice giving me a grave warning about taxes I owed the IRS and actually leaving a call back number. I know the IRS doesn't make calls like that. I had a friend of mine who is a cop call the number and when he identified himself as a Chicago Police Officer the guy on the other end screamed, "FUCK YOU!"

yeah i say cold callers because they are certainly calling people they've never called before but i would say its probably more lukewarm than cold. There is this crazy method to the madness where there are specifically designed email campaigns with calls sprinkled in. The people getting the calls have opened emails that were sent.

and some of them are really good. a few make more money than SA's and the sales people. You do go through a ton of them though.

My first guess upon seeing the thread title and author was Frank is looking to make a quick $52 again...and feared the shrinkage
