"This could end up being a peak season -- the year he hits .315 or .320 -- but I think he's the same fundamental player that he's been," Sheehan said. "Even being a flawed player, he's still a good one. That contract is a fantastic deal, he's going to be a 3-win player. He's a plus defender, he's plus on the bases."

So where are we in the overall picture with him, seeing what he's doing at the moment while we assess what he will mean if and when the rebuild accelerates into competitiveness and contention?

"Anderson's peak is going to be as a 4-to-5 win player," Sheehan concluded. "He's not someone who is going to be one of the five best players on a championship team, but he's going to be part of that next group of players that really puts the team over the top."

If Anderson hits .315 or .320 this year he is still the same fundamental player he's been, huh? As always with the Baseball Prospectus guys luck is presented as an explanation.

Another bonus if not listening to score mid days is I don't listen to pompous wind bag Joe Sheehan's whiny nasally voice ever

I heard this and took exception with it as well, but for what I suspect are different reasons. If you are a 4 to 5 win player how are you not one of the five best players on your team?

What flaw does a guy hitting .320 with plus defense and plus base running have? Can’t pitch?!

I dont know who this Sheehan guy is but he sounds like one of these numbers/stats geeks that have invaded baseball.

Glad the sport gets more fans but ever talk to one of these guys in real life? I had one guy a few years back who found out i was a baseball fan warm up to me so he could show me how smart he was w/ the baseball #'s. His argument was how Tim Raines was not HOF worthy because his numbers didnt match up to some other players.

My response was "I FUCKING SAW TIM RAINES PLAY WITH MY OWN FUCKING EYES AND WHEN HE WAS AN EXPO HE WAS ONE OF THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE FUCKING LEAGUE. I DONT NEED ANY FUCKING NUMBERS TO TELL ME WHAT KIND OF PLAYER HE WAS BECAUSE I ACTUALLY SAW HIM PLAY IN REAL LIFE!!!

Said it more politely but you get the picture. That shut him up and a potential friend was for naught.

Does Bernstein still promote Sheehan's subscriber newsletter? If not we can then confirm he was previously getting paid to mention it

For many years Dan Bernstein used to rip callers for trying to compare their jobs to the jobs of professional athletes. Surely, he won’t let this pass. Or has he evolved now that Joe Sheehan says so.

That stupid statement that Anderson was not going to be one of the five best players on a championship team is idiotic. I would maintain that a great shortstop on a championship team is At Least one of the five best players on a championship team. A great player is a great player no matter what kind of team he is on. Ernie Banks was a great player on some of the worst teams ever to play baseball. This putz Sheehan is an idiot.

Do people characterize Anderson as a plus defender currently?

I understand that he makes some great plays but he provides far too many mishaps on the mundane to be anything above average and maybe even below average.

With the pitching injuries they might as well consider flipping Timmy on the high.

Why? Why even consider trading a young affordable player when you are trying to make up a good team down the road? They should lace Reinny's laxative or something and get someone in there to spend some money on players. And not trade a top twenty player in all of baseball like Anderson.

Fangraphs had him 10th last year.

Nah. Taken as a whole defensively, he is at least average and trending to being above average. Personally, I think that with all of the shifting that goes on right now in baseball, defense is much harder. Players are being asked to field areas that they never were before and to make throws that they never were asked for before. They really need to reassess the metrics for evaluating a defensive player.

It's a good point to bring up. On paper, it should be easier, guys are bunched up and less ground to cover to make an out. But in reality, for example, 3rd is playing short, sometimes 2nd, and 2nd is halfway out in the outfield. Yeah, I can see that being uncomfortable.

Yep, and I wonder how much they actually get to practice playing defense from those places on the field? There is only so much time before a ball game to take infield practice and how much do they cover this stuff in spring training? I'd like to see the defensive numbers about the number of errors committed when a shift is employed broken down by throwing errors versus fielding errors. My guess is that throwing errors would be up when a shift is employed, especially for the 3rd baseman and the short-stop.
