We literally have missed spring this year.

Like no other year before that I can remember.

it has certainly been wet enough, but to be honest the lack of warmth and sunlight has made it more challenging than you might think. I did a little seeding this spring but kept having to throw more down because it was washing away. Finally i threw a little peat down on top of it to keep things in place and it finally took, although it needs some sun. typically the best time to seed is in early September after a core aeration when you are still getting plenty of sunshine and warmth and can control the irrigation a bit.

Another 4 weeks of spring, should shatter that record, unfortunately.

I realize it will change 100 times, but the 2 week forecast only has 3 days that show no chance of rain. Feels like a miracle if we go 36 hours without rain.

on our last trip out sunday we found a old elm tree with about 30-40 morels around it. under 2" of water. they were completely ruined. pretty diappointed.

in other news, ticks don't seem to care about rain or water. pulled about 5 off of me.

Small farms suffer, large farms are welfare queens and will only get more milk from the federal tittay.

It sure seems that way. Inebriated Rodent, care to chime in?

John Mellencamp said as much at a concert in the . . . early 90s? Maybe it was Springsteen.

Government and farmers would be better off if they didn’t give these payments like last years. I didn’t grow beans so I didn’t bother filling for the 2cents a bushel on corn I would have gotten but all it does is continue to encourage over production. The weather is driving prices up because it’s going to take a bite out of supply but who knows how much. This rain is ridiculous and I’m already looking at plan g as far as this year is concerned. We are double normal moisture for the past 4 weeks and we aren’t even a wet area.

Maybe it's the rain and late planting, but I just drove through bright yellow fields covered with what I originally thought were dandelions. Then I realized that they must be late planted, young soybean plants. Am I right Squirrel?

Probably not beans. If it was beans you’d probably be able to row them pretty easily and the ones up are pretty green. Corn was yellow when it came up but is looking better these days.

Still.. it’s shitty around here. Had fieldswith two feet of water in them a week ago. Used an Amish tile plow to rut the field up and move some water so it’s a bit better but has been raining all day. Could be worse I guess.

I mowed one field of hay tonight in the hopes of three days of warm, dry, sunny weather to dry it out. After another half inch of rain last night, it was iffy at best, but next week's forecast looks about as bad for drying as possible- 30-40% chance of rain every day, highs in the mid sixties and cloud cover. I gotta get started in order to get done.

There is not a single acre of corn or soybeans planted within two miles of my place.

I suspect drought is just around the corner.

No. No one has looked into this.

So this year instead of 'Knee high by the 4th of July', should the slogan be 'On the 5th of September, corn should be at your member?'

People have muddled some in around here but it looks like shit. In the beginning of the week I was thinking of prepping a field last night or today as the forecast looked good. And then Tuesday night happened with another inch plus. I’m about ready to call it a year on corn.

I struggle to reach this goal even in some normal weather years... :(

The hay I mowed Wednesday night seems even wetter tonight. Neighbor stopped me while I was in the field and asked why I hadn't cut and baled his field yet this year- his place was where I got stuck mowing, raking and baling last summer, I think I need a pontoon boat to get out there. Oh, yeah, and he planted 200 little pine trees on his three and a half acres, in no special pattern, just watch out for them...

Fascinating. I know nothing about your line of work other than you need seed, water and soil to start. I have listened to the 'ag report' from Normal IL or whatever they call it a few times and note crop prices go up and down and up and down daily. Wheat went up .21 in a day. Beans down same day. Wow. Then flip flopped it seemed the next time I heard the report. How to plan how to plan. I am in awe of your stamina each year. As uncertainty in weather becomes a constant that has to make this process more difficult. Good luck.
