This and John Wayne Gacy news coverage really fucked me up as a kid I think. My mother was flying home on United that day and she was delayed several hours. Kind of freaked me out.

The plane crashed into what is now the site for Heavenly Bodies.

My parents were at the cemetery that day getting my grandparents gravesite cleaned up for Memorial Day, and heard the crash. They were about 8-9 miles away from the landing site and it sounded like something had happened at the Metra station two blocks away.

Is there anyone here who loved Chicago so much and thought that any publicity about Chicago was a good thing that they were glad to see us in the news? I was eight or nine at the time and a paperboy, and I was like, "Everyone's talking about Chicago. This is awesome!" I was proud to hear Walter Cronkite lead off the news with stories about my city.

The human mind takes us to strange places when identity is at stake. Apparently, I had Second City issues as a kid. Lots of people had that Second City chip on the shoulder, but that seems to have died off as Chicago's influence waned. Now, people rip on Chicago all the time. I swear, I remember when if you made fun of Chicago, the other kids or adults would rip into you.

And I still love Chicago (even the North Side, theoretically), so while I know some of you world travelers will have stories about how the entire East Coast is better, save your words, and while your mouth is open, use it to blow me.

I’ll get Caller Bob right on that.

Whenever the big city stops destroying the rest of the state I think things will really turn around for all you Chicago enthusiasts.

Fuck that’s haunting.

I’m flying in 5 weeks. I shouldn’t have watched that.

Commercial plane crash odds are at 1 in 11 million so not sure why you are scared, plus aren't you supposed to be dead from fungus already?

There’s levels to it.

Something like this story is merely a minor reminder of when planes go bad. Not something that sticks.

The fungus story is still interesting to me. Either the news blew it way out of proportion, or the cdc really has no deal how to combat it. Either way, kinda scary.

Climate change? Big time scary. Especially if you have kids. This country is one of the most ignorant when it comes to climate change, so the apprehension I’m met with when voicing my concerns isn’t surprising. I guess all the scientists around the world are invested in solar panels or something.

With my irrational fear of crashing, I think I’m going to take a pass on this.

Used to be known to O'Hare ramp workers as Flight 191 to Elk Grove.

My dad and I flew to Detroit on family business on a United plane the week that DC-10s were cleared to fly. It's was a turbulent flight and I remember going for the barf bag.

Good to see Jim Gibbons covering some news.

Crest was awarded the Jim Gibbons Memorial Scholarship at Loyola University.

That crash literally killed McDonnell Douglas, which at the time was up there with Boeing.

The DC-10's reputation never recovered and it took its company with it. The DC-10 was a flawed airplane, but this crash was ultimately the result of American Airlines failing to follow the proper steps on engine replacement rather than a flaw with the aircraft.

There were design and maintenance flaws for sure but the crash alone did not kill MD. They flew in to the 2000's carrying passengers and some versions still fly for Fed Ex and UPS I think? Anyway, the reputation plus the three engine design which was too pricey made them vulnerable to the Boeing takeover.

The engines were serviced wrong no doubt, but a single engine serviced all electronics (in this case it was the engine they lost)which was definitely a design flaw. Because of that the crew didn't know of the stall. Even in single engine failure, that thing should have been able to land with minimal injuries at that height/speed.

It did kill McDonnell Douglas as a company. DC-10 sales never recovered and DC-9/MD-80 series sales alone weren't enough to keep them alive in the face of competition from Boeing and a new European company (Airbus)

The grounding of the DC-10 is literally the incident that sparked the downturn of McDonnell Douglas, one which they never recovered from.

This is when the board is at it's best, three consecutive posts(Ogie/Mike/Bob), each as reasonable the others, all with differing opinions.
