They could solve this problem by running a crawl across the bottom of the screen with the necessary information and warnings without interrupting programming. People in the affected areas will get the information they need and people everywhere else can still see regularly scheduled programming.

if you really want to watch the program in question, go to ABC.com and stream it live

Also, if you're watching The Bachelor, you deserve to be shat on

I don't think that's not an option for people with an OTA. You have to select your cable provider and sign in to stream content from ABC, CBS, NBC, etc.

All people in the affected areas need are the warnings. Having the weatherman repeat the same thing over and over, live shots of an unfortunate reporter standing in the rain or even worse, talking on the phone to a local resident, for 30-45 minutes isn't necessary.

I would imagine many people also get severe weather warnings on their phone, too.

What some stations do out here is push regular programming to one of their digital sub frequencies. So the Cubs were on 8.1 here yesterday which is the ABC affiliate. They pushed them to either 8.2 or 8.3 (which is what usually carries wgn games) so it was adjust Matlock or Judge Judy getting preempted. Seems a decent solution.

yeah local broadcasts have the very simple ability to air either the weather or the show on a substation for OTA people. I think one of the major issues is that i do not believe dish or direct tv and many cable channels air the sub frequencies (8.2 8.3 etc)

cable and satellite don't, but if you have a cable or satellite sub, you can stream it live

Weather updates are great. Its when the god damn bottom line pops up with breaking news in the daily life of Lebron that I get all fired up.
