The subtitle sounds more like a mobile phone game. I'm a bit conflicted on this. The visuals are pretty spectacular, but I wish they would've just gone full puppetry with it. By making it look almost like a Nintendo Switch video game, it kind of loses me.

The original also has always left me conflicted. It's hailed as a classic, and visually it was a masterpiece (and a nightmare); but the story was so oddly paced and the characters were pretty stale. Every time i would try to give it another chance, i found myself bored. and i own the DVD. i'd rather watch "labyrinth" or "the witches" for a jim henson film.

since this is going to be a series i guess i'll give it a chance. drops at the end of august.

I liked The Dark Crystal as a kid but it really doesn't hold up. I tried watching it with my son a couple years ago and it's just stupid.

Maybe I'll check this out just for sentimentality.

i'm 2 episodes through so far and it definitely has some promise. there are a ton of familiar voices that will at least keep you intrigued to find out who is who, and some are pretty surprising.

the story, once again, is over complicated. there will be times where you're just overwhelmed. but the pacing i think is better than the original film was--

and it has the benefit of being a prequel, so you don't have to recall the movie all that much to follow it.

once again, it's visually stunning. i think the puppetry is actually the weakest element of this, but i appreciate the effort. the locations are really wonderful to look at. and the music is really good.

the original movie was a favorite of mine as when we bought it, it came with a book that basically described the world of dark crystal. So having an understanding of the fictional history helps understand what the hell is actually happening.

because of that, its helped me continue to enjoy this. we are starting the show as a family later this week.

started the first episode last night with kids. perhaps i should of started with the original movie with them. It kept me interested but the kids were like this is stupid dad.

Is this about Nagy and the running game?

we're through 3 episodes, and plodding along. there is a lot to take in, but i like some things going on. still a bit hard to keep track of all the characters.

and some of the puppetry looks a little childish.

A bad Bears loss affects every aspect of life.

finished last night. i'd say after episode 5, this starts to get really captivating. the breakdown and frailty of the clans of gelfling is a strong subplot that carries the next few episodes, until they unite against the skeksis. the battle sequences are extremely well crafted, balancing the puppetry with CGI FX.

it wound up being a lot better than i was expecting when i first saw the trailer months ago. i've seen some "dark crystal" purists on social media dismiss it, but none of the ones who have disliked it have watched the entire 10 episodes. some couldn't get past the pilot. if you can withstand the exposition in the beginning, and the complexity of the world, i think you'll find it a satisfying fantasy epic.

my only two gripes would be: the heretic & mystic's "opera" full of meta jokes that i thought didn't belong and were over the top; and, the one drawback of puppetry is...there isn't much of a way of showing emotion or reaction in a character's face. sometimes a contortion due to an emotional outburst is necessary, and that doesn't come through with these effects. it leaves it kind of stilted and sometimes even silly.

but overall, i really enjoyed this, better than i remember liking the original movie (which i now want to re-watch, of course). and i look forward to it continuing. i've heard it's being renewed for a second season.

last episode i watched was with the heretic and wanderer. The show is pretty good. much better than most of the tripe that netflix spits out. as one who loved the movie and had the companion book which i read cover to cover a few times. I think it follows the history pretty well.

My only gripe is that basically all the gelfling characters are hardly compelling. all the other characters are better.

Chamberlain is by far the best character in this story. he even was in the movie. his speech to Rian in the carriage was great.

The Skeksis view, simultaneously, themselves both as predators in an ecosystem and gods, where you can live as slaves or die as enemies.

His ability to sew discord is great.
