Few companies appeal to more disparate corners of American society than the Walt Disney Co. , so count us among the bewildered to see Disney CEO Bob Iger march to the front lines of the culture wars.

Mr. Iger told Reuters this week that it would be “very difficult” for Disney to continue filming its movie and television content in Georgia if a new state abortion law takes effect. “I think many people who work for us will not want to work there, and we will have to heed their wishes in that regard. Right now we are watching it very carefully,” Mr. Iger said.

Georgia recently passed a bill banning abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which is usually around six weeks of gestation. Such heartbeat bills are moving through several states, though the federal courts are likely to rule that they violate the Supreme Court’s abortion precedents. Perhaps the High Court will hear an appeal, though this week the Justices declined to hear a lower-court decision overturning an Indiana law that barred abortion based on gender, race or disability.

Mr. Iger is probably trying to please the bulk of his employees and Hollywood who lean left. Disney’s competitors at Netflix have condemned the Georgia law. But for Mr. Iger this looks like a business and political mistake of the kind he rarely makes. Disney of all companies should not want to be seen as an engine of the left’s cultural imperialism. The company’s new streaming service is pitched as “family friendly,” which presumably means customers in Macon as well as Manhattan.

More than a few Americans may also notice the contradiction that Disney is more worried about filming in a U.S. state that has passed a law democratically than it is operating its theme park and hawking its films in China, which uses facial-recognition software to monitor its population and has a million Uighurs in re-education camps.

Georgians have a right to self government, and like other Americans they aren’t fond of receiving ultimatums from elites on the coasts. It won’t help Mr. Iger’s business or his progressive causes if he persuades half the country that Disney thinks they’re deplorable.

ya, this is a perfect example of misinterpreting a statement and playing chicken little.

Huh?

WSJ is scolding Disney for involving themselves in "culture wars" because their CEO stated: “I think many people who work for us will not want to work there, and we will have to heed their wishes in that regard. Right now we are watching it very carefully,” Mr. Iger said.

Their interpretation of the statement is clunky and wrong. Disney is not taking any position. Their talent may take a position. That is very important for Disney as their business (entertainment) is dependent on talent. It's not like Chik Fil A where you can replace the cashier because he's a burrito. If Will Smith says I'm not working in Georgia then you find an equivalent place where he will.

You are right KW but what was the impetus for Iger to even mention it. Why didn't he just watch it carefully from the quiet of the boardroom? Was he asked for a comment or did he choose to make a statement? If he chose then he involved his company in it.

He was being interviewed by Reuters and they asked his/Disney's position.

The Op-Ed is right though. If you want to punish people because you don't like their laws it's hypocritical to do business in China, and then say we can't film in Georgia because of an abortion law. He's scoring cheap political points by threatening them.

It's exactly what he's doing. But you typed 6 lols, so you win I guess?

Your analysis of this Op-Eds is like watching someone with Parkison's trying to dissect a frog.

I recommend you step back, deep breath, and stop being a frightened white male.

The CEO is not threatening anything. He informed the interviewer the talent/labor Disney employs may refuse to work in Georgia. Given the industry, Disney cannot simply fire and replace their talent. When filming another cash cow like Star Wars movie or Avengers movie, Disney will find another suitable location

The "talent" is just as hypocritical. Fuckin Sansa Stark saying she won't work in Georgia meanwhile she had no problem cashing those GOT checks filmed in Northern Ireland.

WFR is mostly right here. It's hard to take Iger's comments seriously.

Yep. The other issue is that not filming in Georgia is more injuring people doing temporary work on the sets or hotels/restaurants. First they can't get an abortion, now they can't get a job. So they can't buy condoms. The cycle continues.

It would do you well to read this:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Testicle

I presume you were born with a pair and they got lost somewhere along the way. Based on previous conversations, I believe that you are yourself a white male. Despite what you have been convinced of by other men who lack them and a few women who have them, there is nothing wrong with being a white male. In fact, it is a characteristic that you have no control over. Your self-degradation earns you no respect from any perceived underprivileged group. "White men" is a term used as a pejorative by mentally inferior people who oddly strive to ingratiate themselves to groups of people who hate them. I hope for your sake that you progress enough in life to someday look back and be utterly embarrassed by such a pathetic belief system. You have nothing to apologize for except your lack of an original thought.

Disney has been a fucked up company for decades. They care less about their employees let alone the public. They only care about making beau coup profit and they play the race and gay rights cards to the hilt.

One of my favorite parts of the piece is that we are eliminating the legacy of MLK in the name of social "justice".

It's pretty amazing how much Trump and Obama are alike when it comes to the rights of those that have the temerity to disagree with them.
