I like DePaul in this one. Aguirre and Cummings are unstoppable.

Too bad the Bruins got their revenge two years later in DePaul's opener.

Iirc Kiki Vanderweghe made his name that day.

Terry Cummings was 0 for 3 in the NCAA Tournament and a one seed all three times.

the commercials are a nice touch. I never had envisioned there ever being a pabst blue ribbon commercial, but now I wanna see one with oddly-effeminate hipsters in nuthugger jeans living it up while the 70s croons I'VE GOT PABST BLUE RIBBON ON MY MIIIIIIIINNNNDDDDD!!!

That explains it. Probably drunk.

This is just a shade before me time, like 1-2 years. Kind of weird that I would fall in love with college basketball the years AFTER Magic and Bird. However, that is when DePaul reigned supreme and they definitely had a national cheerleader for the program in Al Mc Guire.

I don't think younger people understand the value placed on sports programming back in those days. The NCAA touney and NBA playoffs were on tape delay after the 10:30 news on week days back then. Sure, you would get Saturday late morning and early afternoon games. However, even the NFL wasn't all that prioritized on Sunday. Networks held their weekday prime time programming as sacred.

You watched every little scrap that they gave you because you knew you weren't getting any more.

I remember the revelation of 24 hour sports radio. I was sleeping over at Matt Di Frisco's house in NYC after a rugby away game at Fordham. I was there with Pete Marigliano and Paulie Malatesta, so these were real NYC, sports loving eye ties. They flipped on The Fan as we were going to sleep and even in my drunken state I couldn't fall asleep because I was so fascinated by the format.

I don't think it's true but they did seem to have a special relationship.

Linda Yu, eh? She would be a good addition to Newper's game . . . you know, that game with the first and last names?

I am a Chinese or whatever broad broadcasting on tv in Chicago and a potentially very bad Cubs free agent signing, and I am also not white or black or even a spicy Latino, and remember it's Chicago in 1979, and not San Fran, so this is all weird.

I'll write this in Millennialese now:

So, I am a strong Asian woman who broke the very real barriers long established against Asian women in Chicago news broadcasting, and I am also a proud half-Japanese, half-Persian migrant worker pitching his heart out diversifying a game that is less pale and stale (and, thanks to the Latina Jessica Mendoza, less male) by the moment, and I think that is great. Immigrants and migrants are what is great about America; diversity is our strength. TBH, If you can't handle that, go back to your basic-as-shit white rural town and please die, you ratchety af relic.

In the days before the Internet, Steve and Gary used to talk about Linda and Ray on occasion.

People who are used to watching a 70 year old Linda Yu in recent years may not remember that Linda was rather attractive when she first arrived in Chicago around the time DePaul basketball became good and was frequently televised on NBC.

That span of 5 years in the early 80s is all the evidence you need to promote Ray Meyer as the worst coach in college basketball history.

Biggest fraud ever.

Trivia: name another coach/program that has gone out in the first round of the NCAA tourney as a #1 seed more times in their history than Meyer did in a 5 year span?

Answer: N/A

Why in the world would Linda Yu be doing Ray Meyer?

DePaul lost those games in the round of 32. So, given the number of teams now, it would be the equivalent of losing in the first weekend these days.

So, I'd say the answer is Bill Self.

Calipari is a pretty horrible coach considering the amount of success relative to his talent.

DePaul lost those games in the round of 32. So, given the number of teams now, it would be the equivalent of losing in the first weekend these days.

So, I'd say the answer is Bill Self.

The tournament only had 48 teams back then and DePaul lost in their opening round game as the #1 seed 3x. 2 of those times they were the #1 overall seed in the entire tournament.

In fact, DePaul was the #1 seed 4x in 5 years and lost in the opening round 3x in a row and then managed to make it all the way to the S16 in 1984 before losing to a lower seeded Virginia.

The Bill Self comparison is laughable.

Since the tournament expanded to 40 teams in 1979 Kansas has failed to get out of the round of 32 as the #1 seed 3x, but I believe only one of those was with Self (2010). Since 2007 alone Kansas has gotten past the round of 32 as a #1 seed SEVEN TIMES and has a title. Bill Self runs circles around Ray Meyer.

No one comes close to Ray Meyer's ineptitude. Ray was the #1 seed 4x and only got out of the round of 32 once and that was the 1984 debacle.

From 1979 to the 64 team expansion of 1985 only 2 other #1 seeds lost in the round of 32, UNC in 1979 and Oregon State in 1981.

Since the 64 team expansion 19 teams have lost in the round of 32 or round of 64 (Virginia 2018). The only teams to do it more than once were Kansas (3x, but also several success stories), UNC (2x, but several success stories), Stanford (2x), Villanova (2x, but 2 titles in between).

I don't believe it's even possible to come up with an argument to counter my statement that Ray Meyer is the single worst coach in the history of major college basketball.
