And she let that boob run it for what 15 years+?

I don't mean to belabor the point but Halas didn't posthumously put Mike McCaskey in charge. Calling him a bad owner is one thing but to say THE WORST thing he did was leave his assets to his family is pretty ridiculous.

Yeah. That is very true. Halas was a GIANT in the NFL. IT wasn't his fault that the people in his family didn't know how in the hell to hire good people to manage his team. Of course, you can say the same thing even more so about the dickhead who owns the Bulls and the White Sox. Reinny never was a good owner nor a GIANT in the NBA. He got lucky with Jordan and Krause and even then managed to fuck things up afterwards.

The team was absolute shit for the last 15-16 years of his lifetime. It almost certainly would've been better if he'd have sold it when he stepped down as HC. And as virtually every other pro franchise has shown, second and third generation owners pretty much blow. Especially with teams that are the primary source of income for an entire extended family.

Halas built the NFL. He wasn't selling. You are also asking him to have the foresight to predict that the people he loves would suck. Just stick to the last 15 years and ignore the first 45. Still a bad argument but it's better than blaming him for his heirs.

But then I'd have been cheering for a history book and not the team I grew up cheering for. And the history was so dated that there were not only no video recordings to watch, but barely any pictures.

Rooting for CCNY, Paul Brown's teams or the New York baseball Giants would have made almost as much sense.

Yay sports history!

Michael Mc Caskey looks pretty good on paper. You wouldn't have any reservations about him leading the team into the next generation if you didn't know him.

This is what I don't get about the Halas/Mc Caskeys: you have this billion dollar family business. Why are you not grooming at least one family member in each generation? If I were a Mc Caskey kid or parent, I would be at the greatest business management schools that focus on sports management. Afterwards, I would get training in the sports organizations from around the world considered to be the best in class. Then I'd do a stint in the league offices.

There are enough of that family around that they should have experts in labor, ownership, league management, marketing, etc. This would not ensure a great organization but it sure would at least put them in a position to be a great organization.

They went this route with Michael, and it didn't turn out very well.

And my understanding is that there are a number of family members at different levels currently.

Halas would be close. Even Ricketts. He's only owned the previously hapless Cubs for 10 years.

Halas was a horrid owner for the last twenty years of his life. It's laughable that there was a segment of the media and fan base that continually made excuses for his futility, including but not limited to Mugs Halas' death.

Halas stopped being "great" when Sid Luckman got old.

8 championships with him, 1 without him. I was just counting rings. If you' want to count intangibles, how about Veeck?

Halas hired Ditka, so I'm thinking that championship is related to him as well.

If you would have said Jim Finks, it would be more appropriate imo. The game otherwise passed Halas by in the late sixties. Certainly by the late sixties.

And worst of all he left the team to his professionally inept family.

Ditka may be the most overrated Bear in history imo. He was a great coach for three years and a waste thereafter.

And I really wonder how great a player he really was, and how much is meatball nostalgia.

Finks didn't hire a good head coach and had two chances to do so.

He did build an awesome roster, but the Old man got the coach that got the job done.

Finks, for being a quarterback, couldn't find a good one during his tenure with the Bears. If he had found an average quarterback (instead of Avellini/Phipps/Evans) from 1977-1981 the Bears
would have made the playoffs more often than the one and dones in '77 and '79. The Bears finished 7-9 in '78 and the Vikings won the division with a 8-7-1 record. The Bears finished 27th in passing rankings that year. In '80 the Bears were 7-9 and the Vikings won the division with a 9-7 record. Where did the Bears finish in passer rating? 27th. He also traded a first round pick for Phipps, who outside a solid 9 game stretch in '79 contributed nothing to the Bears. The Browns used that first round pick for Ozzie Newsome.

Finks would have also kept Armstrong going in 1982 and given Finks reluctance to draft QBs high in the draft who knows if he would have drafted McMahon in '82 (Ditka was given some influence in the draft more so than the previous head coaches and Ditka wanted McMahon).

They are at different levels within the organization but I'm talking about grooming the kids for excellence in the business. They seemed groomed for mediocrity.

Look at George, the guy has a degrees from ASU, was a tv reporter and a prosecutor in sleepy counties. That's the resume of a life of leisure.

I think Forbes estimated that they were worth 1-2 billion but were undervalued by almost a billion because of management. There are 4-5 generations of Halas' who have owned the Bears. They haven't seemed to produce one A type personality in their entire tree since GSH.
