Gerrit Cole is the obvious choice but if you think JR was cheap with Machado, his head explodes over giving pitchers big, long term contracts.

Next year's rotation should include Giolito, Kopech, Cease and Lopez. I think there is sufficient indefiniteness with that group to sign both a big name and a veteran innings eater for the back end.

I am starting to be ok with Covey as a #5. I would think, Kopech gets a handful of starts in the minors(rehab) before coming up next year.

How do you teach movement. I feel like, if he had that he could be good.

He has to be trusted. Once you devote yourself to tanking and then developing young players, you have to live through the tough times in development. Pitchers take time.

I don't expect Kopech of Cease to be great next year either.

Keuchel was the obvious choice. wasn't going to break the bank. They going to give 5/150 to Madison Bumgarner? no way.

Right. I just don't see that improving. I can't see him ever being better than a 5th starter/long relief

Reiny doesn't like giving more than 3yrs to a pitcher.

yeah, but I feel now was the time to put your best offer on the table. in the offseason, he'll have 15 teams sniffing around.

Yeah there is no way they are giving a SP a big long term deal.

They will sign a couple guys like Ivan Nova and call it good.

We already have Ivan Nova and it's most assuredly not good.

Lopez does have good movement. THe trouble is the control aspect of it. Especially with off speed pitches like cutters and change-ups. When those pitches are picked up by the hitter upon release and go where they aren't supposed to go, they are basically batting practice pitches which get hit hard.

As for teaching movement, my own experience involves experimenting with the grip and finger pressures and no two pitchers throw their pitches the same way. Giolitto right now has the best change-up in baseball from what I see. When he's got that going, it is pretty much impossible to square up on.

Nah I’m now keeping an eye on the Sox game. Wasn’t at 4-0. Missed Timmy’s bomb.

Rough 14 game stretch starting today, if they play .500 over that span you gotta bring up Cease n Robert and make a push for a WC run.

I think it would have some morale building value to the fanbase to get over .500 this late in the season, even if it is for a game and only for a day. There is no reason to think Giolito doesn't go out tonight and continue his magic.
