After Mac made his points the author said it was not his intent to paint everyone there as a racist homophobe. However, he never said that in his article. He did say, though, among other daming things:

While Dahl has vehemently denied it as merely a harmless stunt, its execution was racist and homophobic.

Dahl, for his part, will tell you that there was nothing racist or homophobic about a bunch of white people burning records by artists from marginalized communities, no sir.

He backpedaled when confronted with valid points and made concessions he never mentioned in his article.

Wish Mac would’ve had Dahl on at the same time with this fucking twerp .

Mostly DD had to do with Dahl's immense popularity. Parkins or Speigel having a White Sox themed night wouldn't draw flies. Steve and Gary broke all the rules, and didn't care who liked it. Howard Stern regularly would steal bits from S & G. Dahl couldn't transfer his act to tv, and attempts mostly bombed like Johnny B. Sterns WOR tv show was a classic. Dahl now is unlistenable, partnered with talentless slugs. Stern show is a far cry from it's past, but has it's moments.

Stern always cried the exact opposite, especially when he first came to Chicago. It's laughable how both thought people gave a damn. But as dicey and overt as Howard could get, I could never imagine Robin working with Dahl.

Dahl and stern fan here. I can give you a sizable list of stern steals with zero alteration. The most blatant stern thievery was calls to the bijou.

I’m a fair man so I’m open to an explanation how he, a local ny dh, found out about an obscure gay movie theater in Chicago which gave hilariously flamboyant descrirtions of the movies it was running on its telephone answering machine

This new critique of the event is just ad post hoc disingenuity from unknown writers trying to make a name for themselves with a novel take. You see this in literary criticism all the time. It's practically encouraged in university English programs.

I had this one pegged, so to speak, perfectly. The guy had zero support for his argument beyond “ I think”

Jimmy's Piersall's reaction to DD was priceless. He'd even bellyache during fireworks that it was rattling his head.

Bill Gleason was butthurt about it too. He kept referring to Dahl as Gary Deeb.

Such a God-awful song. Perhaps 9/11 didn't happen soon enough.

This is how someone who has no answer, and just wants to be a victim responds.

I agree RR, always hated Dahl. Never found his fat ass funny or talented. I was a big Stern fan, loved seeing him obliterate Dahl, Matthews, mancow and the rest of those talentless hacks.

You didn't see it in our backyard, Stern was relegated to 1160 and CKG where he did fuck-all in the ratings.

And that is how an asshole longing to insert himself in something while consistently adding nothing cries out.

Everyone else posting in this thread knew the answer. It was an odd question with an obvious answer not worth responding to. But you want to stir meaningless bullshit. As usual.

And he got pounded in the ratings until he stopped bothering with Dahl and just did his show

Listened to the gay internet journalist on M & P who said DD was racist. Normally this would be a pet cause for limp Parkins to support. But, he played it smart and was neutral not to offend Mac, his meal ticket, who's pro Dahl.

I don't know about local ratings but Stern was syndicated across the country, had to be in over 75 markets. His show also came on at 5 a.m local time.

I think the theft from Dahl occurred well before Stern was ever syndicated. Both Stern and Dahl were in Detroit at the same time. Dahl was the much bigger deal. When Stern left Detroit he took some of Dahl's bits with him.

That's a bad take. Stern would not exist without Dahl. At the time of Disco Demolition nobody had even heard of Howard Stern.

about 15 years ago there was still talk about bob odenkirk, who's a friend of dahl's, helming a project that would dramatize the "disco demolition" event with odenkirk playing dahl.

i tried calling into dahl's show back at the time to ask him about working with odenkirk. the screener said, "what?" and i said i wanted to ask him about his relationship with odenkirk and how the project is coming along. the screener replied, "i think the only person who'd want to know about that is you. anything else?" i said no, and he hung up.

can't say i don't love seeing dahl in this light. but i don't think the event was meant to be racist. just stupid.

Am I fundamentally misunderstanding disco?

I don't consider its genesis in gay or black communities and certainly not Latin.

It had, for the most part, come and gone by the time I was conscious of music. As I said earlier, Disco to me is cheesy white guy stuff.

The writer tried to hot take by comparing the anti disco movement to if someone started an anti rap movement. I think it is much more comparable to early 90s grunge as a response to late 80s hair bands.

One answer Mac and Parkins missed, and it was really the writers only response, was how a Curtis Mayfield record got into the mix (if it even did). The most obvious answer to me is that people gained entry that night for free if they brought a record, so kids brought whatever record in their collection that wasn't theirs to get into the party.

Look, it is pretty clear that the writer started with a controversial conclusion and retrofitted unrelated facts to form his analysis. The crowd wasn't really even violent. He cited arrests made but that was mostly destruction of property and that was at a time Chicago police were extremely enthusiastic at doing their job.

I'm not sure how you could not find early 80s steve and garry not funny. maybe you had to be 13.
