This part of the southside between Ashland and Halsted, and Pershin' and 47th Street.

Seems to be some special place with big signs if you enter the area.

What is in there? Buncha factories and industrial businesses it seems. But is there a common product? Like, is this where livestock is slaughtered or some shit? Or do the businesses vary?

47th and Morgan there is a big-ass factory or some shit but there is no sign to be found to tell us what it is for. This kinda goes for most factories in Chicago. Why the lack of advertisement? Anywhere else you go in the USA, you pass by a factory and theres always a big sign that tells you what it is.

What is the history of this place? Seems kinda weird how its a hidden area, that NOONE ever mentions. I mean, shouldnt this be some place that people hype up as a place to find good jobs or some shit? Like engineers, lawyers, etc?

I dont get why its so on the down low. Is there something hiding here? Any mob related shit hidden here?

Tell me what this place is all about.

I worked for a company in the 90's that had offices in the Stockyards. Once we outsourced everything to China, we closed our factory and leased a warehouse/office building in the Stockyards. Not the greatest smelling location in the summer.

I think the only ones here who can actually remember the Stockyards are The Hawk and Walt.

I did attend the International Stock Show at the Amphitheater in 1971. I'm guessing it was probably the last one held there. I will never forget an animal I saw that day called a "Cattalo" that was a half-breed bison. It was like nothing I had ever seen before and its face is still seared in my memory.

my dad used to wander around there as a wee lad. there was a monumental fire in 1934 that he watched. Steam trains moving in and out. cattle being driven up the streets. seems life was a hell of a lot more inneresting back in the day.

God, I would have liked to have seen the Stockyards. What an amazing place. Sickening, but amazing. Its impact was felt nationwide--and, culturally, world-wide. Even the International Amphitheatre had a great history. (My wife grew up across the street.) This city was rocking.

They mention the stockyards in The Virginian several times. Pretty awesome.

If the City created some kind of historical district, I promise it would be a hit with tourists. Have a small cattle drive every day and people would flock to it like Tombstone

My grandfather worked there just long enough to save up enough to open his own business. My grandmother loved the day he quit. She despised washing his stockyards work clothes.

I miss the The Butcher Shop. I remember taking my future wife there based on ads I had heard on the Score (those were some classic spots by Boers, Mac, and North). I don't know if it was black-owned, but it seemed as though most employees and customers were black. The food was really good.

We have the exact same story. Everyone there was first rate. We discovered that my wife was pregnant with my oldest there one day while we sat in there eating and drinking between the lunch and dinner sessions. The memories of them laughing at her Shirley Temples still brings a laugh.

The two married managers were expecting at the same time. When they had her daughter, they'd come sit and eat with us. They couldn't have been nicer. When they closed down they moved to the chain's location in Memphis or Dallas iirc.
