Everyone seems to forget what put him on the national stage. When the Iranians booted the Shah he had people there setting up a Social Security system for them. His people got taken hostage ,they asked him for ransom. He said fuck you and sent in people who worked for him with previous military experience to rescue them

People mocked Stockdale because he appeared to be senile and was obviously unfit to serve as president. It certainly wasn't "obvious" that his poor debate performance arose from injuries sustained during his captivity in Vietnam.
