I am not sure who you are excoriating here.

The hypocrisy of the SNL Left.
SNL has never poked fun at a war hero....

Trump denied that McCain was heroic. No one said that about Stockdale. People mocked him because he appeared to be mentally incompetent.

...and Stockdale deserved it. He signed up for it...you gotta be ready to take the heat. If Stockdale didn't want to be made fun of or criticized...he should have stayed home living out his golden years at age 68.

JORR is right, though. McCain...who acted and proved to be raging political, self-serving douchebag (despite being a military hero) gets his own, separate rules. it's bullshit.

What were his separate rules? A guy who couldn't serve because of bone spurs shouldn't be mocking the quality of service of a guy like McCain.

You have to be pretty enamored with Donald Trump to think McCain was the bad guy in their situation.

The Boomer ethic has always been that avoiding Vietnam was noble and righteous. Until it could be used to club Bush II and Trump over the head.

Can we focus on the fact that Perot was our last decent chance at breaking the two party stranglehold rather than bashing a 30 year old SNL skit?

Your bias is showing. Clinton was the first to get beaten over the head as a Vietnam war draft dodger.

The 60s counterculture opposed Vietnam for moral and constitutional reasons. That's how its members justified "evading" the draft.

Trump has never been aligned with this principled opposition to Vietnam.

Consequently, Democratic criticism of Trump's phony medical exemption from the draft doesn't strike me as hypocritical.

McCain crashed 3 planes, he should have been kicked out long before his capture.

I guess I'm the biased one! Seriously, your point would make more sense if those who had money and prospects of any kind were ever in danger of having to go. Vietnam was fought, like most wars, by the poor. Those who were opposing the war for "moral and constitutional" reasons were mainly doing so from the safety of college campuses. You can draw a distinction between Bush/Trump and Clinton/Sanders if you want, but I'd say that's some fairly fine parsing.

Huh? Why do you think Trump's father arranged a medical exemption for his son? Because Donald had graduated from college and no longer qualified for a student deferment, thereby making him eligible for the draft.

And there were plenty of draft resisters who weren't students.

These points aside, the fact remains that "the left" justified evading the draft based on a principled opposition to the war. It certainly never celebrated the ability of rich people to buy their way out of military obligations. In fact, part of the left's critique of the war was that wealthy people didn't have to sacrifice anything for the country to fight in it. That's hardly fine parsing.

Not to mention that the unconnected couldn't find the magical national guard slots for their kids to keep Alabama safe from air attack from Mississippi. And evade that to work for The Party

The point was to bring the war to a halt, which the anti-war movement succeeded in doing.

I didn't know you were upset. I'm not.

But I certainly see a significant difference between the anti-war left and a guy who had his daddy buy his way out of the draft. Certainly Trump himself does, too, which is why he maintains the fiction that a medical condition prevented him from serving in Vietnam.

I didn't know you were upset. I'm not.

But I certainly see a significant difference between the anti-war left and a guy who had his daddy buy his way out of the draft. Certainly Trump himself does, too, which is why he maintains the fiction that a medical condition prevented him from serving in Vietnam.

You seem upset with Trump. I don't blame anyone for avoiding Vietnam however they had to do it. I guess I don't consider a student deferment as noble as you do.

My point was that Trump took hell for mocking John McCain, a truly bad person, yet people guffawed at the mockery of poor old Stockdale who was obviously suffering from his long years of capture.

Nah, it’s not. I have a strong dislike for most politicians but McCain earned at the very least the right to be a douchebag. And I’d strongly disagree that he’s any worse than any other career politician. I also have little doubt that a single man or woman on this board would have gone what he went through without tapping out given the choice. This is all cynical political/somewhat-partisan bullshit as per usual here. As a politician sure he was as cynical and useless as the rest of the lot but at least he paid his dues. I have very little patience for anyone on here criticizing him while not condemning Trump as a significantly worse person and politician. Do better JORR!

I guess that lost in all this was that he was right about Nafta with no labor guarantees.

And that both sides foolishly pushed for it.

The point was to bring the war to a halt, which the anti-war movement succeeded in doing.

Then we shouldn't be upset about anyone doing whatever they could to avoid going, right?

Lol cmon man we all lose arguments just throw in the towel. You’re now arguing Sanders and Trumps anti war credentials

His wife waited for him to come back all fucked up from the Hanoi Hilton and then he dumped her because she was disfigured in a car wreck. He talked non-stop about how terrible Obamacare was for years and when he had a chance to end it, he preferred to stick it up Trump's ass rather than supposedly help America. He was the poster boy for privilege. Bad guy.

My guy didn’t leave fallen men behind. Good for you if you can cast stones. I can’t. I’m taking that plane home and telling my guys I’ll put a word in

At least with health care I see it that he realized that a no vote was better than the alternative.
