At least with health care I see it that he realized that a no vote was better than the alternative.

If that were true, I wouldn't criticize him for it. That's not what happened.

And I don't have a strong opinion on Obamacare one way or the other. McCain had the strong opinion. He abandoned it just to jam up Donald Trump.

Then we shouldn't be upset about anyone doing whatever they could to avoid going, right?

I didn't know you were upset. I'm not.

But I certainly see a significant difference between the anti-war left and a guy who had his daddy buy his way out of the draft. Certainly Trump himself does, too, which is why he maintains the fiction that a medical condition prevented him from serving in Vietnam.

You seem upset with Trump. I don't blame anyone for avoiding Vietnam however they had to do it. I guess I don't consider a student deferment as noble as you do.

Well I certainly dislike Trump for many reasons. But his evasion of the draft isn't something that matters to me all that much. I do think his advocacy for a massive military buildup is hypocritical, though.

All of that is beside the point, though. Your refusal to see the difference between participants in the anti-war movement such as Sanders and a rich kid whose father pulled strings for him is pretty revealing of your own bias.

The issue is someone choosing not to go mocking the service of someone who did choose to go.

Whatever. John McCain was a bad guy who deserved to be mocked.

My point was that Trump took hell for mocking John McCain, a truly bad person, yet people guffawed at the mockery of poor old Stockdale who was obviously suffering from his long years of capture.

Trump denied that McCain was heroic. No one said that about Stockdale. People mocked him because he appeared to be mentally incompetent.

...and Stockdale deserved it. He signed up for it...you gotta be ready to take the heat. If Stockdale didn't want to be made fun of or criticized...he should have stayed home living out his golden years at age 68.

JORR is right, though. McCain...who acted and proved to be raging political, self-serving douchebag (despite being a military hero) gets his own, separate rules. it's bullshit.

Nah, it’s not. I have a strong dislike for most politicians but McCain earned at the very least the right to be a douchebag. And I’d strongly disagree that he’s any worse than any other career politician. I also have little doubt that a single man or woman on this board would have gone what he went through without tapping out given the choice. This is all cynical political/somewhat-partisan bullshit as per usual here. As a politician sure he was as cynical and useless as the rest of the lot but at least he paid his dues. I have very little patience for anyone on here criticizing him while not condemning Trump as a significantly worse person and politician. Do better JORR!

His wife waited for him to come back all fucked up from the Hanoi Hilton and then he dumped her because she was disfigured in a car wreck. McCain did every Republican a favor with that vote. If the Republicans had any sort of replacement plan then maybe you can repeal it. They didn't. He could do it since he didn't care about re-election.

This whole election would have been about dropping coverage for 20 million Americans. It is possible McCain saved us from single payer healthcare and the mess that would be.

It becomes harder by the day to believe you aren't a big Trump supporter. Trump was clearly the bad guy in their feud even if McCain in his career was far from perfect.

I don't really give a fuck if you think I'm a Trump supporter. John McCain was a real bad guy. Thank god he wasn't president. We'd probably be in the midst of WWIII best case or more likely the world would have been nuked.

People talk about Trump's temperament being unsuitable. I haven't seen Trump take a stand against himself out of pure anger and spite. And that was against a fellow American. You can imagine how McCain might have responded to an Iranian, a Russian, or goofy Kim.

Couldn't agree more. This is a spot on description of McCain. I'm sorry, FF....his honorable Military service does NOT excuse a lifetime of douchebaggery afterward.

TM is exactly right. Not the same, but lets not limit this to Trump or the Republicans. The elite sit in both parties. Clinton avoided Vietnam...Biden got a deferment for Asthma (lol). I'm pretty sure if a Kennedy or a Daley came up for the draft...they'd have gotten an easy deferment. There is no way, you can compare any of these clowns to a lower or middle class kid that gets a draft notice who doesn't even have money to get to Canada if they wanted to....way different.

He had an entire career of being a fraud...not just "in the end"

So why no respect for a kind of rich kid who joined and served?

If Hillary were president, we'd surely be at war and no one would be talking Epstein. Silver linings, I suppose.

I have plenty of respect for those who serve...rich or poor. Regardless...rich kids will be fine.

You said McCain had special rules in regards to Trump mocking his service though.

I sure did....where are you going with this?
McCain was loved by the media because he hated Trump.
Trump mocked McCain...he got lambasted for it. Stockdale got mocked and it was good clean comedy. that's a very real example of special treatment. Never said Trump was right....Trump's an ass.

Doesn't change the fact that McCain post honorable military career was a bad guy.

Stockdale 's military heroism wasn't mocked by anyone.

McCain's was.

Huge difference.

McCain was loved by the media while Trump was still just a reality tv star.

Trump got lambasted for mocking McCain's service when Trump, for questionable or not reasons, did not participate at all. I wasn't around for the Stockdale treatment but mocking his military service, especially by those either unwilling or unable to serve, would be just as bad.

So, once again, what were the special rules? The mocking of military service has been considered wrong my whole life. It didn't start with McCain.
