Did he ever strike you out when he was at Bloom and you were at Argo?

Missed this thread.

Great book. Quick read. A little rueful, but also hilarious.

He comes off a bit like an ass****, but a) he's a pro athlete, and b) I think he was trying to be as honest as possible. The stuff about amphetamines is all there, as are conflicting memories of # 7. I guess I expected Mickey to act the way he did--he was Mickey Mantle--but he had his cool side, too. I could see why Mickey was a little pissed off at the book--but I could also see how others would be, too.

But Bouton is realistic about himself being an ass and a washed-up pitcher, too. It was sad to see him trying to come back from a career-ending injury and having to reinvent himself as a pitcher for an awful team (two awful teams). You really get the feel of what it was like to be a big-leaguer on the bottom of the hierarchy. Or perhaps it's about someone who was on top of the world at a young age, and now is fighting for a bullpen spot on the worst team in the league.

Bouton was also the inventor of Big League Chew gum.
