Uh oh on Contreras.

Just saw this:

The #Cubs have placed C Wilson Contreras on the injured list due to a strained right foot. Theo Epstein says

Machete!!!! I saw rumors a few days ago that they wanted Maldanado to be the backup and that Vic was going to be used as trade bait elsewhere.

Moment to pause and reflect on Montgomery throwing the most important pitch in the history of the franchise.

Monty was good that year we won it all. He was lights out. 2017 he was not too bad as well. But 2018/2019 he was inconsistent.

Good luck to him.

why is it that we dump our shit on the Royals?

Hammel, TWood, Soler, and now Montgomery

I got to hear all the great trade bait stories this morning about the Cubs: Caratini, Russell, Happ.

Yeah the teams will be busting down the door for those whimpers of talent.

Why the hell would the Cubs want to trade Caratini, he's a really valuable guy on a contending team. A switch hitting backup catcher who can also play 1st and 3rd? He can handle the bat well enough. There's a lot of value there.

Greene would take Schwarber.

Castellanos would take much less. Too bad that Edwards is back to being a pile of suck.

I like the idea of Castellanos platooning in LF with Schwarber, and being rental injury insurance.

Who would be the National League equivalent of Castellanos?

In addition to Castellanos, the Cubs are tracking D-backs outfielder Jarrod Dyson and Blue Jays utility man Eric Sogard, according to Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma in an article for The Athletic (subscription required). Like Castellanos, Dyson and Sogard are on expiring deals.

Dyson is making roughly $6 million less than Castellanos this season, which could be an important factor if the Cubs are hoping to avoid exceeding the third luxury-tax threshold of $246 million, which comes with the steepest penalties. The lefty-swinging Dyson would presumably platoon with Almora.

Sogard, meanwhile, could fill a Ben Zobrist-type role for the Cubs, hitting leadoff and handling multiple positions. The veteran is earning just $555,000 from the Jays this season while hitting .305/.369/.491. Zobrist is still on an unpaid leave of absence from the team while dealing with a family matter.

Theo's backed himself into a corner that some value might have to go for a rent-a-player. If Almora goes hopefully then he can get a couple years of 500 + at bats to see what he can do. Heyward then full-time CF will be interesting.

This could blow up worse than Justin Wilson. Shane Greene's results this year seem to largely be luck. And he doesn't have a solid history...he has had more brutal years than average or better years. AVOID.

I'm a no on Greene also.

I think Sogard is going to be the guy.

Castellanos is the priority. He kills lefties and with Almora sucking he makes more sense and costs less than Greene.

Jarrod Dyson?

WTF, he's worse than Almora and he's 34.

Agreed...signing Dyson would be a fireable offense.

The thing is, if Zobrist and Morrow could return and be at a reasonably good level of performance, they wouldn't need to make any deals. Zobrist could fill the need for a high OBP guy at the top of the order and play 2nd and Morrow could be the set up man. I just never want to see Edwards again this season.

Dude Zobrist is 38 and hasn't played for several months. I'm not so sure you just suit up and play at a high level. At least not without a spring training and live pitching.
Dude is done.

I think he will be going to AAA in a couple weeks to get his timing back and be back with the team September 1st and wind up being an important cog down the stretch and in the playoffs.
