Hmm... I consider Tarantino a first ballot HOFer. The next movie that is a POS will be his first one, as far as I'm concerned. The characters makes his movies worth the time. That crazy patriot in Hateful 8 ALONE made it worth watching.

As far as the greatest films are concerned, none have been made by Tarantino. He's not even close. The man is a sadist, who has been allowed to indulge in his sick fantasies (like the blow job in Hateful Eight) on the big screen. He never would have had a career, if not for Travolta and Sam Jackson in Pulp Fiction. He got lucky finding Christopher Walz in Inglorious Basterds, who made the film what it is. The rest of his films belong in a dumpster. They're total trash.

Any reasonable person would characterize Pulp Fiction as one of the greats. Is Tarantino a sick fuck? Reasonable people could say yes. So I hear you. It wouldn't be surprising to find out QT has been driving around for years with dead hookers in his trunk.

Looking at his 8 films, I think you can pretty rank them in chronological order. I would move Django ahead of Inglorious Bastards I guess, but other than that I'd rank them...

Dogs
Pulp
Jackie
Kill Bill
Kill Bill (don't remember which one was better)
Django
Bastards
Hateful (don't remember if this was good or bad)

That's how I would rank them but I wouldn't have a problem with Dogs, Pulp and Jackie appearing in any order you prefer in the top 3.

A little too purist for me.

Basterds is near the top on my list.

Jackie Brown is an acquired taste that I’ve never been able to stomach.

Travolta was going nowhere....Look who's talking or not.

I get that QT movies aren't for everyone, but his body of work warrants him a first ballot HOF entry. Not a question.

Jackie Brown probably is his best, but Pulp still my fav.

As big a fan of his movies as I am, I have not yet seen Django or Hateful :eye:

Ranking those I have seen:

Pulp
Kill Bill I
ResDogs
True Romance*
Basterds
KB II
JB

...and not a bad one in the bunch

*yeah, I know TR was directed by Tony Scott, but he’s dead; plus, despite the typical TS direction, QT wrote it, and IMO it is more of a Tarantino film because of it. Hell, the scene between Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken is worth damn near the price of admission by itself.

I can see how a reasonable person could think that Quentin Tarantino's movies are garbage. His stories are convoluted and not very compelling and his characters are like cartoon characters. However, he does write some snappy dialogue and his movies are always visually interesting. It just depends if you're more of a fan of substance or style.

Pulp Fiction is a masterpiece, arguably the best film of the 90s.

This is my feeling.

I think he is living on his early work but that early work was so good it puts him with the greats. If you put True Romance in the group with Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, that alone is a fantastic career. He could have become a recluse and fanboys would be making pilgrimages to him.

I have fun watching all the others after Jackie Brown but, like you said, they all seem cartoonish, like someone creating a movie from a graphic novel. There isn't much truth in the stories or depth in the characters. They throw out some Sorkinesque lines that are thought provoking but untrue to character.

Kill Bill, IB, Hateful Eight...those are all pretty shallow characters introduced really only to lead to violence orgies.

If you want depth from 8 characters, read a book.

read somewhere that Tarantino recut this film post-Cannes after early reviews kept bitching about something called the Bechdel test.

i thought he "rejected that hypothesis". the bechdel test is basically a feminist litmus test, to make sure you're including women in a constructive way. the test is based on whether 2 women are in the same scene talking to each other that doesn't involve a man or having babies. it began as a joke from a comic strip but now it's an actual watch dog tactic.

i don't agree at all that IB had shallow characters. in fact, i think it has the most breadth of any QT film.

Who would have been able to pull off the dance scene in Pulp Fiction while playing a hitman, if not Travolta? No one.

It's too bad he hasn't had better parts to play through the years, because he is an excellent actor. He did a good job in "A Civil Action" opposite Robert Duvall.

I think remembering that these are all part of his own universe is important too. hes said that with the ending of IB, it would give people a fascination with violence and by association movies/the theater vice versa. So, Kill Bill (as one film) and its extreme violence/style are the types of movies that his characters from Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, etc. would go see and talk about.

Also, Hateful Eight is fantastic because its like watching a stage play. I love being able to see what the other actors are doing to fill their time on screen when not the focus of the scene. And its a hilarious script.

Shakes’ list is spot on. Reservoir Dogs is my all time favorite, and he gets 2-3 dead on as well.

I saw the movie last night. My brother and I were stunned at how dumb the storyline was with very little purpose and nothing to wrap it all together. There are a few individual scenes that were funny and shocking. A few good lines. Some decent imagery. But this film fell very flat especially with such a star laden cast.

Listening to other movie goers after the show, many of them seemed to enjoy it.

Maybe if I had a better sense for the late 60’s and all the cultural stuff going on in So Cal, I would understand what he was trying to do. But I have to admit that my first viewing of Pulp Fiction confused me greatly, and I didn’t like it. So I will give this film a second chance. But I dread sitting through it again.

Some 3 star reviews for this. Ouch. The Globe and Mail's review just killed Tarantino. Have to go outside the U.S. to find any objectivity.

Hate to say I told you so, but I did.
