They have really good album art. I liked the art for High Violet more than any of the songs on it. And I appreciate songs that make you want to air-drum instead of air-guitar. They and the D-Plan are good for that.

Which Tindersticks album would you recommend for someone who has never heard their stuff?

That's a good question! I'll fail to answer it! Thing is, I've never thought of them as an album band; their albums are very rarely cohesive and discrete statements so much as just sprawling volumes of songs, especially the first three albums. I will say that I got into them the summer after high school when I still only had dial-up, so maybe finding their songs piecemeal had something to do with that conclusion, but I think there's something to it.

The first three albums have more of a baroque/chamber feel, then the next three are more soul-inspired, and then the reformed-band stuff from 2008 on is kind of a mix. "City Sickness" is their best "pop" song, "People Keep Comin' Around" and "You Take This Heart of Mine" are their best slow jams, "My Sister" is their best longform spoken-word deal, see where those lead you.

Wow.
Probably the saddest Dinosaur Jr record.

Outta Hand and Mind Glow are gut punches.
One of my favorite bands that I hated when I first heard them....

I remember the first time I heard Dinosaur Jr. I think they were just Dinosaur at the time. Anyway, the song was "Freak Scene" and I was just blown away. They played with the power of a hardcore band but with emotion that no hardcore band could even approach.

They added the Jr after their 1st record and Freak Scene was Dinosaur Jr.
The first record I heard (that I didn't like and didn't get) was Green Mind.
I think I was turned off by J's voice, but after immediately dismissing them, another guy in my band
told me to give them another shot, and soon after we were covering Puke + Cry.
They became one of my favorite bands, and I've seen them a bunch of times and partially blame that on my tinnitus.

I don't listen to music nearly as much as I used to and this is my first contribution to this thread.

I have been listening to The National's Sleep Well Beast over the last couple weeks and it is excellent. I bought it when it was released a couple years ago but never really listened to it. Guess I'll wait a couple more years to listen to their newest album.

I'm a pretty big fan of their entire catalog.
Every album is good, and every album has certain stand out tracks that are all timers.
W_Z mentioned England from High Violet.
This live version still gives me chills.

I wouldn't wait a couple years to listen to I Am Easy To Find.
At least check out Quiet Light, Not in Kansas, and So Far So Fast.
Damn - I wish I was seeing them tonight....

Sorry, now I'm on a National binge, and SWB arguably has the best 5 consecutive song stretch in their discography.

They used "Baby" in last week's episode of Big Little Lies.

Interesting story. A rediscovered album:

That show seems very satisfied with itself over its music selections.

I might have to check this out. I just looked at the setlist, and they only played songs from their first 3 albums. :thumleft:

It appears they've been playing the identical set all summer, so they were VERY tight.
I've never seen them personally, and I didn't know Casablancas was such a funny goofball between songs.
It was awesome.

Material Issue pandora station is a great mix.

I'm going to try singing Kim The Waitress.

I saw they were playing Backlot Bash in Skokie. How can there be Material Issue without Mr. Issue? Is Phil Angotti playing Ellison?

That was the arrangement a few years ago when they were on Local Anesthetic (RIP). I guess Angotti on lead vocals would be the next best thing to the actual Material Issue. Well, them or the Gin Blossoms, I guess.

They didn't play Juicebox or Is This It.

Setlist failure.
