after having just spent the last 2 months pouring over resumes and cover letters, its all just so much formal hooplah bullshit.

I stopped reading cover letters about 2 weeks in and just basically glanced at their resumes. if what they sold looked even remotely technical or complicated OR something interesting caught my eye, they got a 10 minute phone call from me and i went from there.

I argue with my wife about her résumé all the time. She is very strict in her interpretations and refuses to use the slightest embellishments. For example, she manages four or five people but doesn't have the word "manager" in her title, so her résumé does not reflect her management experience.

In her previous job she reported to a guy who had less education, less experience, and less knowledge than she did. But if you read their respective résumés you would hire him over her, no question. Which is probably why she was reporting to him. My wife supervised an entire software conversion but her résumé doesn't reflect that fact because nobody in the C-suite saw fit to actually declare her the supervisor. On the other hand, the guy she reported to who has no clue about the software or how it works has a résumé that takes credit for the conversion.

I have repeatedly explained to my wife that in her effort to enforce the integrity of her résumé she is actually cheating potential employers who will undoubtedly hire the bozo she reported to rather than her.

"Responsible for X employees" and "oversaw conversion of" would be great phrases for her to get her real world work experience across, while still not embellishing or making up titles.

I understand. But she would say that she is not technically responsible for those employees (although practically she certainly is).

I think I have almost convinced her that the entire point of a résumé is to show yourself in the best light possible and that doesn't mean you have to lie. Although I would say that her previous boss claiming any credit for the conversion is certainly a lie, he would probably say it happened on his watch so he gets credit. I don't have a problem with that. I just don't want my old lady getting buried because she's too honorable to use the same standard as the rest of the world.

Anything she can say would be helpful. "trained employees on ...", "consulted with employees on...", approved quotes or purchase orders...Whatever. Those action words is what tends to jump out at people. Sounds like she can put a ton of those on her resume and accurately describe her daily routine without letting on to her actual title, or lackthereof.

And its cut throat. Half the resumes I looked at weren't accurate.
"account manager." Fuck you, dumbass. You sold cars. That ins't a manager of anything.

its also important to lie, because youre competing with dozens of other resumes full of lies. especially if they ask how much you made at your last job. LIE.

it drives me insane. we have a dipshit manager that write every email in long winded formal wording. never gets to the fucking point. its so bad i see his wall of text and just move on to the next email. fuck him.

my favorite resumes are the ones where they type everything out, then select every word go to the built in thesaurus and pick the longest most godawful word and substitute it. To the point where the simple "I worked with people in helping them pick out their health insurance" to "I proactively collaberated with consumers in provisioning curative goods and services in a expediate and suitable manner"
