The guy in the tweet didn't even mention the Sox got two prospects back in the deal too. The extra $1 million in international signing money would probably only get them similar lottery ticket kind of players anyways.

So they save $1.25M on the deal next year. They gave up $1M in international money and cash.

Injury plagued Nate Jones was likely to be non-tendered by the Sox this offseason. They traded him for two live pitchers, who obviously are lottery tickets. Jones underwent Tommy John last season and hasn't pitched this season since early May, so he is a lottery ticket himself at this point.

I think there are a lot of things the Sox do on the cheap. I don't think this is some drastic cost cutting move. If anything, the acquire some goodwill in helping out the Rangers so they can get some Int'l pool money.

I'm not denying that JERRY? is a cheap fuck and the team will likely be better off when he is dead or sells. I just don't see this as some grand scheme to save at most a million dollars. There are MANY other things that the Sox do on the cheap that are far more egregious.

However, this guy writes about the White Sox minor league system in his spare time. He likely has no idea who any of the players they got back even are but even if he did he didn't mention it at all and acted like it was purely a money saving move.

Sure it would help if they spent money on pitchers. But right now the bigger problem is the young pitchers keep getting hurt.

The $1 million they lost in international spending would have been on total longshots too. The White Sox signed around 30 of them in 2018.

Not really. It simply means you’re paying attention. Doing moves that accomplish nothing but saving money is an embarrassment, particularly given the offseason the team just had and the payroll the last three years.

The bonus pool is for larger signings. You can sign as many as you want for $10K or whatever. The best prospects get the $1M bonuses. Basically, the Sox are saying they don’t care about that aspect of minor league development. But that is where the Cubs got Eloy and Gleyber. So, there is talent out there.

I wish the best for Nate Jones who I've always thought was miscast from the day he came up and this shit really mean nothing to me. They didn't trade Colome which I think is a good thing. Perhaps there may be a plan to add real starting pitching? Doubtful but possible.
