if he had to win his next contract during this season, I don't see that he has done anything in the front office's eyes to change their decision not to extend him

It will be funny when Raw Deal Ricky gets replaced by him a second time.

You knew what Theo was/is. He can build a team up, make a few trades, but doesn't seem to understand how to draft pitching. He won a WS, my guess is that he stays 1 more year, and he moves on.

Does he start getting ready for the 2024 Presidential election or does he simply decide to be CEO of a fortune 500 company?

I guess not signing Arrrieta, though his alternative was even worse.

I think Theo moves on to the commissioners office next as a commissioner in training

He has been saved from himself giving away a big contract to a horrible pitcher just about every year he has been here.

Was it he who signed Edwin Jackson? That Japanese pitcher. Anibel Sanchez...the list is long

I think Theo is a great GM and Joe is a great manager. It just seems that the time is up.

Oh, I'm fully aware of this. The next sox coach is probably Vazquez or that young guy in the minors who won manager of the year a couple of years ago

Not sure Yu are correct on this.

Definitely time for Maddon to go. Sometimes, a change is just needed for change's sake. That said, with this bad and injured of a bullpen, and an offense full of guys with great baseball card stats that completely shut down for days at a time, I'm not sure any other manager could have done much better this season.

When the President of baseball ops says that "our offense is broken" at the end of last season, then his biggest moves of the offseason is Daniel Descalso and getting another new hitting and pitching coach, timmy bigfan is correct. Time to start looking at the front office more than the manager and coaching staff.

Still just 1 game back in the division. The core guys will heat up, and Joe will rest them at crunch time, explaining it with double talk.

Frank is right. This is on the front office not Joe.

It can be on both. There isn't one answer. When looking to improve, tackle the easier solutions first.

For Theo to cover his ass, it will be MUCH easier for him to non-tender Maddon and use him as a scapegoat for his team's failures.

In all the interviews and articles I have seen/read, it seems like the front office takes as much responsibility for failures as the blame that is laid on the players and manager.

Don't you have enough to be worried about with this lame rebuild. No pitching equals no playoffs iggyboy. Stay out of cubs business.

why wouldnt they sign him.

Name one manager that can do it better with this group.

Maddon is annoying but he's also a good manager. He won a fuckin World Series and took on the Chicago media head-on like noone else ever did.

It's on both Joe and the front office.

The Heyward deal was an understandable mistake, other teams were in on him just as heavily. Not being willing to deal either one of Almora or Schwarber for Verlander was really the beginning of the end in terms of talent evaluation.

From the field side, every single prospect that wasn't a Hendry guy has plateaued. Even Bryant, although I still maintain that both his and Heyward's troubles stem from being hit in the head with fastballs. But the organization hasn't developed people. Sure there are going to be misses - Houston just traded Derek Fisher because he wasn't going to pan out as expected. But the Cubs are 0-for-all. Schwarber, Almora, Happ, Russell, Bryant. Not one of them has improved over where they were in August 2016. Most of them have regressed.

I still think that Theo will get an offer he claims he can't refuse to go run the DNC for the 2020 and 2022 election cycles, and that Ricketts will choose not to pay Joe anything close to the his current contract. Joe will go manage the Mets. He won't be able to resist being that spotlight.

Side note. I am not sure why anyone other than David Axlerod and Dan Bernstein think Theo has the DNC head as his future. I have not seen that really anywhere in the last two years other than those two dopes.

Why is Joe such a cuck for the Cubs? They publicly embarrassed him by not extending him. If he hadn't impressed them with 95 wins per year, there really wasn't much more he could do in year 5 that could change their opinion. Yet there he sits pining for them. It seems pretty obvious that the Cubs have already ended the relationship in their minds.

I could see senator or governor from Mass.

He's paid very well to do a job, the Cubs don't owe him dick. His contract expires in 2 months and he's free to go anywhere he wants.

Maddon is gone at the end of this season. He makes far more money than most managers and there have been lots of his decisions that are easy to question, if not criticize. Ross or Girardi seem like likely choices to succeed him. Joe will be able to find work elsewhere, but likely at a much lower salary, as teams are just not paying managers as they did 4-5 years ago.

He would be perfect for the Mets and for the New York media. Now that the Mets have gotten close to a Wild Card, once they inevitably fall short Mickey Callaway will get the axe.
