I think he really likes being in the big city and the spotlight. If he goes, he won't get another big market job (at least next year). Boston, NY, LA all have their guys in place. I could see Philly hiring him.

I think Theo has already decided that Joe is not coming back next year. Egos clashing between front office and manager/coach certainly not unheard of here (Bears mid 80's, Bulls mid 90's, Hawks the past few years). This is just something to float in the media so when Joe is not brought back, they can say Joe did not play well with others. This will be especially important if the the Cubs make the playoffs again. It may be hard to explain getting rid of a manager after 5 consecutive playoff appearances.

Girardi is an odd choice. He got fired by Yankees for being a redass and little shit with players.

The Cubs might need a redass now. These are veteran players. They don't need a friend or buddy.

The Cubs may well need more of a kick-in-the-ass manager after five years of Maddon, but do teams hire those guys anymore? Seems like everyone is there to be a more-or-less contemporary of the players while following instructions from upstairs to the letter.
